Re: Model 81 "woodmaster" Firing pin??
Is there a down side to replacing the firing pin (Brownells) and trying out the new one to see if the malfunction has gone away?

Backyard Bambi
I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Deer are an increasingly numerous pest here. What has happened is real estate prices got so high many farmers (and their heirs) realized they could evade much hard work and get a pile of money by selling their land (some of which had been in the same f...

Re: Rem. 8 Carbine
Hi. New guy here. Yes, I love it. [Remington are you noticing?] My thought/concern, the recoil is not purely a function of the end escape velocity. It is more about chamber pressure and the initial inertia of the bullet and the bullet's resistance to going down the barrel. The phrase dwell time come...

Redfield peep sight
I don't know how common these are, but for what it is worth my own Model 81 came from the pawn shop with a Redfield rear sight.

Re: The NRA's Special Police 81
If you visit the NRA museum it is over there on the right when you get down the entry hall. :) A shame it gets such little play there. They had big vaults full of them at FBI Quantico back in the WWII era. I am sure many here have seen the old B&W FBI photo of the safe full of Tommy guns and Mod...

Re: U.S. Navy Model 81's?
Given that Hatcher mentions the Remington autoloaders in his Notebook, they were known to the military. My other readings over the decades have left me with the understanding that sometime between the World Wars, a few, probably less than 100, were purchased for use by the US Marines (who are Navy, ...

Remington 81 and Doe
This doe who presented a head on shot was no match for the Model 81. That is an exit wound. The 200 gr. bullet travelled diagnally front to back then exited. She dropped in her tracks. Fairly typical of how that caliber performs in these woods.

My model 81
I encountered this Model 81 in a Front Royal pawn shop two decades ago. It was cheap (about $80) because it had no firing pin. In caliber .35 Remington. Hello Brownells. Getting the new firing pin only took about 2 weeks. Figuring out how to disassemle the gun took a few more days. That was in the d...
