Model 8 Buck
Hello everyone, just wanted to post a picture of this 7 point buck that I took December 5th, 2015 with my 1928 Model 8 in 30 Remington. He came through quickly at about 60 yards with his head down trailing a doe and never stopped walking but when the Model 8 spoke, he answered. This is my favorite d...

Re: Picking up an FN today
Thanks Cam, as soon as I saw your reply about the caliber, I went to the FN 1900 section on the forum and enjoyed reading all about them. Now I need an FN to go along with my Model 8!

Re: any info would be great
Hello Brian841, I agree, if it shoots fine, leave it alone. When I got mine it had a slam fire issue and two different gunsmiths looked at it and neither fixed the problem. The second one chose not to even take a look at it since the first guy worked on it for liability reasons. I researched the rif...

Hello there Barrett and welcome to the forum. I agree with everyone about leaving the rifle original. I have a 1928 Model 8 in .30 Remington and I love it. If your grandsons use the rifle and learn the iron sights, it can really be a fun rifle to hunt with. I love hunting with my iron sights and hav...

Re: First Hunt with my Model 8
I have a set of reloading dies but haven't worked up any loads yet. I used the 150 grain load from Wisconsin Cartridge Comapany for this hunt. My rifle seems to like the 150 grain bullets so I will probably stick with them. I also have a Remington Model 141 in .30 Remington but haven't really shot i...

Re: First Hunt with my Model 8
Thanks Wildgoose, I am really glad that the rifle wasn't working properly when I first got it because it made me research and find out more about the rifle. Doing the repair myself with the help of my brother made it special too. I really do love this old rifle and it will never be sold as long as I...

First Hunt with my Model 8
Hello everyone, just wanted to post a picture of my first hunt with my 1928 Model 8. This is the rifle my fiance gave me for Christmas in 2011. http://thegreatmodel8.remingtonsociety.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2509 I had been looking forward to hunting with it since then. Opening day was 11-...

Re: New Member: Rem Model 8 issues?
Hello Nightrider and welcome to the forum. Big Dooley here, I am the one with the Model 8 that slam fired. I was able to find a very nice Firearms Disassembly book with good pictures of the internals of the rifle. I decided that I would try to determine the problem and see if I could fix it myself. ...

Remington Model 8 and Model 141
Hello everyone, I just wanted to post a picture of my Model 8 and my newly acquired Model 141 Gamemaster. I received the Model 8 for Christmas 2011 from my fiance' and it is a real beauty. It was manufactured in 1928 and is chambered in .30 Remington. I just bought the 141 Gamemaster this past Satur...

Re: Remington Model 8 Owner
I was able to get my rifle functioning properly and it is working great now. I am ready to start practicing with it so I can hunt whitetails with it this fall. Re: Rem Model 8 Slam fires
Well, we finally figured out what the problem was. After straightening the bent firing pin we found, I took it to the range this past Saturday to try it out. I loaded a round into the magazine and when I pressed the bolt release the gun fired. This was the same problem as before. I checked the empty...

Re: Rem Model 8 Slam fires
I haven't been able to figure out what happened to it. Not sure if it was that way when he worked on it or not. I don't know if he checked that either. I have a much better understanding of how the rifle works now though.

Re: Remington Model 8 Owner
Yes Jack, this is the rifle that had the bent firing pin. I posted a picture of the firing pin under my thread about the slam fire issue. I wanted this rifle the first time I saw it in my friend's local gun shop. Nice vintage rifles like this just seem to find their way into his shop. None of the ot...

Here is the problem. Bent firing pin. My brother and I were able to straighten it and it is working in the bolt correctly now. Will try to get to the range this weekend and try it out.

Thanks Jack for the tips. I plan to try and straighten it like you suggested later this evening. Hopefully this will take care of it and I can begin using the rifle without fear of a slam fire. Thanks again.

Re: Rem Model 8 Slam fires
Update on the slam fire issue. I disassembled the rifle last night and when I checked the bolt the firing pin was sticking at times and would not return like it should. I took the firing pin out and the end that strikes the primer is bent and was lodging in the bolt and that was preventing it from r...

Re: Rem Model 8 Slam fires
I am sure the hammer and sear are ok on this one. I am wondering if it has the wrong firing pin installed in it or one that has been made. Not sure what the gunsmith who worked on it did when he had it. I will try the primed empty case and see what happens. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks. I w...

Re: Rem Model 8 Slam fires
I have checked the hammer and sear engagement and it seems fine. If you press the bolt release and let the bolt go forward on an empty chamber, you can see the hammer is still in the cocked position. The hammer is not falling which leads me to believe the firing pin is the problem. I am going to dis...

Update on my Model 8. I haven't given up on it, just been really busy and haven't had the time to spend with it lately. I plan to try and check the firing pin and hammer and trigger as described in the replies above. Thanks for the information. I will check it out and let you know what I find.

Re: Rem Model 8 Slam fires
Thanks 81Police, my rifle was made in 1928. Do you know if this prior to firing pin springs? I am pretty sure that it has to do with the inertia of the bolt when released by the bolt release that is causing this issue. When you pull the bolt handle and release the bolt slowly, it doesn't do this. Al...

Rem Model 8 Slam fires
I received a nice Remington Model 8 this past Christmas. It is a .30 Remington and is in really good condition. The problem I am having at the range is that when I load the magazine and use the bolt release to let the bolt go forward, the rifle fires as soon as the bolt closes. I have taken it down ...
