Re: 35REM accuracy
Both of the recipes I tried last worked quite well. The Varget hits hard so I expect it'll prove quite the hunting round.

Re: 35REM accuracy
The powder I used with good success at 43gr & 42.7gr was WC852.
Today I loaded 10 rounds of WC852 at 42.5gr and 10 rounds of Varget at 39.5gr to try out next weekend. I'll report back.

The 43gr load proved to be as accurate as the 42.7. I'll play with 42.5gr next to see if the action cycles reliably.

Re: 35REM accuracy
I don't mind at all; I necksized the winchester brass I initially shot through my rifle and used 200gr winchester round nose, jacketed bullets, under WC8xx @ 42.7grs (it's a pulldown ball powder which I use for my 30 caliber, or there about, rifles). I am not giving you the exact number just yet bec...

After adjusting the front sight for POI 2" to the right, and lowering the Williams diopter a bit, I shot my reloads today. What a great improvement in accuracy! 5 shots per group, both groups measured a bit under 1.5" at 100 yards. The first 10 were a lighter recipe and the action function...

Re: Question on slip-on or laced recoil pads
I finally made it back to the farm today from the north east and after quite a bit of bush hogging and other such work that was neglected while I was on travel for 6 weeks I had to try out my 81…..the priorities of life! Well, after tightening the barrel nut and concentrating on the targets it becam...

Re: Original finish
My rifle's stock is very clean, with only minor scratches which I could lightly sand off but I won't. This will remain in its natural, weathered condition. Thank you for the Watco Danish Oil Finish suggestion, interesting product, I'll try it.

Re: Original finish
Great exchange of info, thanks guys! Don't know that I'll recoat my 81 as it's in pretty good shape but the finish being original, as old as it is, it may not hurt to coat the stock and hangurd a bit more for extra protection, if I am to take it into the woods. This is one unusual rifle and I am so ...

Re: Original finish
I have used Minwax rub on poly in thin coats, on multiple rifles, with great success. I've recently tried tung oil and it too works very well because within a week one can apply a number of coats, to desired sheen, plus it dries hard and protects very well. But I am always interested in new more nat...

Re: shooting damn near MOA w/ .300 Savage
I ordered from Midway USA the Lee neck size & crimp dies, and the trimmer. Mine is a 35Rem but non the less I plan to neck size and crimp to err on the side of caution. As Roger has stated there's a bit of recoil there so it's best not to run the risk of failure. I also ordered Hornady InterLock...

Wildgoose thank you. It is elevation and windage adjustable and seems to be in fully functional shape even though I've not yet adjusted it. Only problem I have with it is that the diopetr hole is quite large so I am not as acurate as I could be with a smaller hole which would help further focus my s...

My 81 came with a Williams diopter and that's probably not an original part so I assume the rifle was drilled? How effective is this diopter, it being adjustable?

Slip-ons work really well for me and they allow any stock to remain original. Personally I am all for refinishing old rifles because I am a stickler for cleanliness and perfection. So, when I buy an old rifle and it needs it I'll bring it to in as new condition as possible. I care less about it's fu...

Re: Spanner Wrench
Glad to hear it Clem, it's hard to judge through a post only.
My issue is the opposite, the barrel nut was so loose that I took it off by hand so after a real good cleaning I'd like to properly tighten with a spanner wrench. Hoping to get the most accuracy out of this rifle!
