Keltg, Your new .300 Savage 81 has some great wood figuring in the stock. I think you got a great 81 for what you paid - very nice! Thank you Adam, the recoil pad not being original was a bit of a let down but over all she's in good shape. Been thinking of stripping the finish and redoing the stock...

Newest member of my collection
Went to a local gun show yesterday and was looking for either a 22 hornet or a 222 Remington, well i found both but nothing in my price range, if you didn't have 1000.00 you didn't buy. Well we where on our way out when a A5 Browning caught my eye, then I seen her a Model 81 with a side mount scope,...

i am not sure if this the right thing to do, but there is a small parts store that caters to the agriculture industry and they carry a wide selection of spring steel, and coil springs, they are always very helpful if they don't have it they will try to find a match. I would look for a similar store ...

Re: Dent removal on bottom of magazine shell
you should be good to go, have to take some pics show off how it works for you. the clip i did worked out good for the bottom but the previous owner used pliers or vise grips and pushed the sides of the magazine in at the bottom as well. Managed to get the worst of that out as well.

Re: Dent removal on bottom of magazine shell
i used my router for the outside block radius, i had a round nose bit that was a pretty close match. for the inside radius i used a fairly thin piece that i could move across the width of the magazine. i also tried a hard wood dowel that was rounded on the end and that worked pretty good as well.

i have used a propane torch in the past to help loosen tight threads. also tapping while warm with a non-marring hammer close to the threaded area helps the loosening.

Cam is right the best fix is to replace the shroud. there is a lot of internal force with the heavy springs inside the shroud. If soldering is the way you choose to go, find an experienced gunsmith that is well versed in brazing and soldering.
