Re: can the Model 8/81 function without magazine indicator?
I believe what you are referring to as the magazine indicator is the bolt hold open, and then its tab which protrudes down from the left side of the receiver to release the bolt. The gun will function just fine without it, it just won't lock open on empty. The spring also isn't strictly necessary fo...

Re: Reloading Model 8 in 30 Remington.
In my experience using Graf's .32 Remington brass to load .30 Remington, you do not need to ream the necks. However, I do find it helps to anneal the necks after resizing, as the Graf's brass tends to be on the more brittle side, and resizing it work hardens it further. The Hornady 3035 (150gr) and ...

Re: .300 Savage 81 not cycling properly
The Remington 8 and 81 have a plunger style ejector in the bolt face, much like an AR-15 or M1 Garand. That ejector will kick out the spent case as soon as the neck clears the barrel extension, but the 8 and 81 are known for weak ejection in general. Failure to eject the case far enough to clear the...

Re: Serial 97 Pre-Model 8
What an interesting and early rifle. If it were mine, I'd be temped to remove the 4 screws that secure the cover plate on the barrel and see if it will pop off with some gentle persuasion. My guess would be that it is a repair to a damaged barrel jacket or inspection plate of some sort, and that the...

Re: odd failure
My comment was referring to the spring case itself, not the recoil spring. It appears the metal was too brittle. Ideally with most firearms components, you want steel that will deform when it reaches its failure point, rather than shatter, which appears to be the case for the spring case pictured ab...

Re: action & recoil spring length ?
The action springs interchange between the 8/81 rifles and the Auto-5 and Remington 11 shotguns, to the extent that I have used an Auto-5 action spring to replace one in a Model 81. I do not believe there is any difference between action springs of different calibers. The Browning Auto-5 service man...

Re: odd failure
Looking at the photos of your spring case, it looks like the failure area is crystalline in nature with voids visible. This would be a metallurgical issue in manufacturing, either the quality of steel used or the heat treatment. I expect it had no external evidence of this, or it would have been cul...

Would anyone be willing to take some measurements of a Model 8?
Hi Gents, I am wondering if one of you would be willing to help me out. I purchased a quite early (1904) FN made Browning Auto-5 shotgun as a restoration project. It has a straight wrist stock that needs to be replaced, as it itself looks to be a replacement made by a blind whittler. Finding replace...

WRA Co. Remington Model 8 .32
What do you guys make of this rifle? An early .32 Remington model 8 with WRA Co. engraved on the bottom of the magazine. Seller believes it to be a Winchester ammunition test gun.

Re: Standard Arms Model G
Part 2: My Example I am an unabashed fan of weird guns, a habitual Forgotten Weapons viewer and an amateur gunsmith. Odd semi-autos tickle my fancy, and the first gun I purchased was a Remington Model 81 after I fell in love with the long recoil system. Eventually I also got a Winchester 1907, and t...

Re: loading .32 Rem with .32 Win special dies?
If you let the dies out enough, you should be able to neck size using .32 Win Special dies. The problem is that if you set them down fully, the .32 Win Special dies will push the shoulder down incorrectly for the .32 Remington, which has a shallower shoulder angle than the Winchester cartridge. So, ...

Re: .32 Rem brass at Grafs HEADS UP!
They also have .25 Remington brass available for the same price.
I just bought some of the .32 for the purpose of resizing to .30. I have heard some concerns of neck cracking of the Graf's brass. Would those of you who have experience with this supplier suggest annealing before the first firing?

Re: Very Slow Lock Time
You do not want to deepen the hole in the stock at all if possible. The pin that holds in the action spring plug is only designed to do so during disassembly, the stock should be putting pressure on the action spring plug during firing. The best way I have found to install the screw is to place the ...

.35 Remington Kleanbore Box
Does anyone have a .35 Remington Kleanbore box from the 1930s-40s that they would be willing to scan each side or take pictures of straight on? I would like to make a repro box to display next to my model 81.

I looked, the reloads were done by Sperry Reloading. Also I noticed that the cases with backed out primers were headstamped REM-UMC.

Parkerized Model 81 (Update) and Cartridge Case Issue?
Well I got my gun out of layaway today and put around 20 rounds through her, wow that recoil is stout but compared to my Mosin Nagant or 8mm Mauser, not too bad. It has serial number 68XX and date code RG indicating it was made in Nov. 1938. It also has repair code DPP3 indicating it was sent back i...

.35 rem is stamped/engrave into the end of the barrel that protrudes into the receiver and it has the normal safety lever.
