Re: 300 Savage - Reduced Recoil Load
I'll agree on the recoil issue with 300 Savage. I ended up with my Rem 81 in a trade and it's the only rifle I have in that caliber. It is harsh but I am setting up to reload that cartridge and time will tell on a softer load. I don't think this rifle will see all that much use, but I did see my son...

Re: Model 81 Scope Mount Questions
My apologies, I thought I responded to this post back around 5 o'clock and I musta goofed that up too. I'm good at that. I think I found something interesting and right now I'm on the hunt for a Weaver #7 sub-base. It apparently is made for several different Browning style semi-auto shotguns and als...

Re: Stock screw rusted in place
One of my other diversions has me working on old hit n miss engines. I was pondering a bolt that hadn't seen daylight since 1903 when an older fellow suggested the beeswax thing. Now there's a pound of the stuff on my bench.

Model 81 Scope Mount Questions
I have a 1948 model 81 chambered in 300 Savage. Previous owner(s) have not been very considerate of the old girl and I'm trying to figure out how much work I am willing to do without losing on an investment. As you can see in my pictures, the magazine has been "fixed" by someone and the re...

Re: Stock screw rusted in place
Try using beeswax. Yep. Warm the parts with a heat gun and work a small bit of beeswax (no imitations) around any seams or cracks between the two parts. Let cool completely. Do it again. Beeswax is an amazing penetrant. It won't make things easy, just easier.

Re: Hello from UP of Michigan
Hey Thank You for the responses. I have to dig into the old girl for a thorough cleaning and I think I'll have to remove the brass bolt to slid the magazine up through the receiver. I'll take pictures along the way. Very curious about that and I agree; when I found that three cartridges would fit as...

Re: detachable magazines
This thread might be where I belong right now..... I just brought home a model 81. It functions well and I am a happy guy..... The magazine has what appears to be a brass bolt through it side to side. When I got the rifle, I honestly didn't know it didn't belong there. Any ideas? I know that 3 cartr...

Hello from UP of Michigan
Let me say that less than a week ago I didn't know there was such a thing as a Remington 81. I was wandering around on a sale/trade local website and there was an ad for "hunting equipment" and when I asked the fellow what he had, he said "rifle". It took a little bit to get a co...
