Were sling swivels installed on Model 81's?? or were they an after market item?? Came across one the other day and it had them The front one is on the barrel and not the wood fore stock .

Soaking in a good reliable solvent like Hoppes is good. I have also used a small brass brush for tight areas to avoid wearing the finish. A couple areas come to mind. Remove the stock to expose the tangs. You will find a serial number on the side of the tang. The stock should have a serial number stamped in the upper tang slot. I agree @ the plastic, just not the source. Many machine tool suppliers can sell plastic shim stock in various thicknesses down to about .002. It's Great & it is very stable for these applications.... Try it, comes in 8 1/2 x 11 sheets, affordable too... Sounds good ....I will give that a try n...

I have taken the front sight out and put a very thin piece of plastic (like paper thin) under the dovetail of the front sight and then reinstalled the front sight. Rem Model 8 Serial numbers
I can find the serial number for my Model 8 on the underside of the receiver. Is there any other place that I can look to see if there is matching serial numbers??

Thanks for the info Jack......I can only find a serial number on the underside of the receiver and the checkering is indeed not factory. The stock is a bit tired as noted in the pictures.
