Re: Hamer special
There were several errors in the placards related to Bonnie and Clyde history when I went to the Waco "Texas Rangers Museum" in 2016. For example, there was a Winchester Model 1910 .401 rifle (Cat. No. 2030) that said "This Winchester .401 caliber shotgun [sic] was taken from Ray Hami...

Re: Round knob M8s
Hmmm.... the extra screw is on the butt end of the tang. On straight stocks the stock screw is near the end of the trigger housing tang. On curved Model 8 tangs for round or half-knob stocks, the stock screw is farther up. Yours has screws in both of those positions. Have you had the stock off to se...

Re: Barrel sticking to the rear after firing (SOLVED !)
Well.... after reading all the other posts on wood buffers in .25-35 Rem guns, I have decided that it was definitely a factory installation. Why? We may and probably will never know. I believe that the original buffer in my gun and these others was made from oak. But since I was fishing for solution...

Re: Barrel sticking to the rear after firing (SOLVED !)
Yesterday, I tried my new wood buffer that I made from a 7/8" wood dowel rod. I had also polished the chamber with a large bronze bore brush with a little Flitz paste on a patch using a drill motor. Fired 10 rounds with no problems. Gun functioned perfectly.

Re: Barrel sticking to the rear after firing
I've made a new wood buffer from a 7/8" wooden dowel rod and drilled it out with a 9/16" spade bit. I also polished the chamber and will try to fire the gun again before trying the spring. If it functions with the new wood buffer, I might just leave it be.

Re: Finally got this sucker apart!! Rem 8 .25 Rem
I'm glad you got it apart. These .25 Rem and .25-35 Rem guns are proving to be a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. However, I think that we have enough evidence to prove that the guns did at one time come with a wood buffer instead of a spring, even if Henwood and other authorities can...

Just fired some Grafs .25 Rem brass (2nd loading). Actually, I only fired one and notice two splits on the neck at the shoulder. I immediately stopped. Do you have a Rem 8/81 specific tool that you are using to get the barrel bushing nut out of the shroud? Instead of WD-40 or regular lubricating oils, try some Liquid Wrench, Kroil, or other penetrating oil.

I say I'm looking for a .25 Rem buffer spring AND washer(s) because in my only other .25 Rem Model 8, there was a weak buffer spring (I could compress it with my fingers, unlike any other 8/81 caliber spring) AND two solid "spacer" washers on the receiver end of the buffer spring. None of ...

Hamer most likely did not have any form of BAR at the ambush. He used a Rem 8 in an unspecified caliber. Hinton was the only LEO with a BAR, which he borrowed from the Texas National Guard, I believe.

What is your rifle's serial number? From the pic it looks like 7322, which would be 1907. Why do you say yours was made in 1928?
Your rifle's stock also has the raised cheeks which only on the early guns before 1919.

The 8 and 81 rifles did not come with sling mounts. Starting in 1920, the barrel shroud had a threaded hole and screw where one can be mounted. The buttstock had no swivel mounting provided, except on the metal buttplates with the bottom tang some owners would replace the buttplate screw in the bott...

According to Henwood's book "The Great Remington 8 and Model 81 Autoloading Rifles", your rifle was made in 1907 (If I'm correct reading your serial number as 7322) and is a Model 8. The EUU3 code is odd in that it has an extra U. EU3 would mean a factory repair in Oct 1927. I'm not sure w...

Intellivore, If you look at the fourth pic in the first group of pics in my original post, you will see where a gunsmith welded a second angled stock bolt hole on top of the original stock bolt hole upper tang of the Model 8 receiver. Well... the Frankengun 8/81 .250 Savage shoots okay. Here's a six-shot group at 50-yds using factory Remington Core-Lokt 100 gr loads. I shot a total of 20 and had two stove-pipe jams of empty cases, so maybe the action isn't cycling hard enough with this load. I will measure the twist rate later to...
