Re: Dating a Model 11 Shotgun
It was a 12 gage.
Turned out the barrel did not match the receiver so I did not buy it.
I appreciate the feedback and help.

Dating a Model 11 Shotgun
I am very interested in a Remington Model 11 Shotgun. It has a two digit date code stamped -"MM" - which I believe translates to 1943. If that is the case, it is missing the month - is that normal? The serial number is 495331, which also falls into 1943 if my research is accurate. Any help...

Re: Tangs screws
I did notice the unusual non-screw and metal damage viewing the gun on GB while it was still listed. Thought it strange at the time but forgot about it until you posted Trepang. Still have the GB listing on my "Ended Watch List", went back and took a look at it. Agree with other posts tha...

Tangs screws
I don't know how I haven't seen this before but today noticed that one of the tang screws on my 1922 Model 8 isn't really a screw at all - there is no slot in whatever is there. Pretty obvious there has been work done on it judging by the damage to the adjacent area. The only history I have on the g...

Insomnia 8 & 81 wax job
Insomnia got me up at 0130 so I dug out the 1922 Model 8 and 1949 Model 81, broke them down, gave them a good scrubbing and a coat of wax. Love these old guns. To clean I use Hoppes #9 bore cleaner on J. Dewey jags, patches and rods. To oil the bore for storage I use Hoppes #9 oil on a Swab-Its Bore...

This 8/81 business is addictive!!!! Picked up a 1949 Model 81 in .35 Rem today. Almost mint condition. Came from an Upstate New York consignment shop and had a chance to talk to the previous owner. The story goes that the original owner bought it, put it away, got sick and died without ever having s...

Based on what I have learned from ya'll, am I correct in saying this is also not original Remington checkering on this 81?

Re: Repair date vs manufacture date - Please help
Trepang: According to Henwood in his Rem 8/81 book on Model 8 exterior markings, the 'trefoil' (sort of a three leaf pattern) on the trigger plate and just above it on the receiver, another 'trefoil', are the fitters stamps. The circled N above the serial number is the assemblers mark. In Henwoods ...

Nice looking .35 Model 8 on GB. 1 day left, @ $800 now
Just happened to be browsing and came across a nice looking .35 cal Model 8 with checkering on stock and fore grip - I still think it's a 8A - Standard though. Looks to be a 1925 model Doesn't look like a dealer selling it. About one day left and it's still under $1K I have no ties nor do I know the...

Re: Picked up 1922 .35Cal Model 8 today
Thanks for the info on those other marks. In someways that 1948 repair stamp makes me feel a little better - at least I know a qualified gunsmith has been into the gun more recently than 1922 when it was new. I just went and removed the barrel assembly from the receiver via the screw/lever under the...

Re: Picked up 1922 .35Cal Model 8 today
The serial number is crystal clear and easy to read as is the 1948 repair stamp. The actual date code is a little more difficult. The "P" is clear but the "N" not so much. I wouldn't be so confident it was an "N" if not for that matching up with the serial number. On th...

Re: Picked up 1922 .35Cal Model 8 today
Thanks and yes that was the gun on GunBroker that was listed as a 1920. When I picked it up today I was a little bit confused. The the first character of the date stamp on the barrel was clearly a "P" but it was a lot more difficult to make out the second character. My best guess was an &q...

Picked up 1922 .35Cal Model 8 today
After over a week delay in shipping, my 1922 Model 8 in .35 Cal came in to my FFL and I was able to pick it up today. Once I got it home I got a better look at the serial number and with some help from this forum I was able to conclusively determine it is a June 1922 model. It was advertised as a 19...

Re: What year did they start putting tang sights on Model 8's?
Just got back from picking it up at the FFL. The screw is present and there are no scratches or discoloration to indicate it ever had a peep sight on it.
The front sight is stamped Lyman and is press fitted into the dove tail - no screw on it.

Repair date vs manufacture date - Please help
Just picked up a Model 8 - my first one. I have read how to date it by the stamp on the left side of the barrel and the serial number but I am still confused. The serial number on the bottom of the receiver is 47190 which as I understand it makes it a 1921 model. The left side of the barrel is stamp...

What year did they start putting tang sights on Model 8's?
I am new to Model 8's. Recently bought a 1922 model in .35 Rem. It has a buckhorn sight and no tang mounted peep sight.
I believe the gun is all original but I am not sure.
What year did Remington begin putting the tang peep sights on the Model 8's?
Thanks in advance.

Last couple questions:
1. One piece or two piece Mauser clips?
2. Have read 6.5mm and 8mm Mauser clips, which works best?
Thanks,

New Member- New to me Model 8. Please tell me what I bought here
Good morning, Last night on somewhat of an impulse I bought a 1922 Model 8 off GB. I have wanted one for sometime after reading Frank Hamer's biography and having an interest in the Bonnie & Clyde story. I don't collect antiques - most of my guns are late model Marlin .45-70's, AR's, Mini-14, Br...

Just joined this site this morning. I live in Calvert County in Southern Maryland and enjoy collecting and shooting firearms of all sorts. Yesterday I bought a 1922 Model 8 in .35 Rem on GB. Been wanting one for years. The movie Highwaymen with Kevin Costner led me to read Hamer's biography which fu...
