Re: 1950, 300 Savage

You are correct on the peep. Good looking gun! Does the extractor have a number stamp on the front face? ...Currently having some issues with fired cases not staying in the extractor, so working through that. Looks like it was maybe drilled for a Williams FP-81? Can anyone confirm? Hole spacing is ...

1950, 300 Savage

Happend to find this one at a Local Bass Pro Shop, late 1950 vintage on .300 Savage. They also had one in .30 Remington but I opted for something I can still find ammo for. Plain, but very nice shape. The magazine indicaotr was not positioned correctly, but I fixed that. Currently having some issues...

Re: Action Spring (Bolt return)

Yes, the “bad metallurgy” was my thought too. Not planning to hunt with it this year…it’s been too long since I’ve been out in the deer woods. Hopefully I get out next year. Just curious…was that your listing?

Re: Action Spring (Bolt return)

I’ll take a closer look, but I don’t think so, didn’t notice any obvious corrosion anywhere. The rifle in general was very clean, and very little gunk in the spring tube. It was broken in the area that the wooden plug resides. It was odd.

Action Spring (Bolt return)

Hello! Anyone know where I can find said spring for my Model 81 .300 Savage? Just took it apart and found mine is broken. I checked Numrich, Classic Firearms and parts, Gunbroker, and eBay...no luck. Thanks!!!

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

 I think you are correct! I took the .35 Rem rifle out to the indoor range Friday, and it functioned flawlessly (all 5 in the magazine)! Being a lefty, the offset scope mount wasn't usable for me, but that old '40s era Weaver worked great for my son! It brought me so much joy shooting that gun,...

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

LOL...Fresh it is! Probably had it apart and back together half a dozen times at least. I appreciate all the advice offered here! Both weren't planned purchases, happened to find the .35 Rem on the used rack at our local shop and they don't like top sit on inventory so they were eager to deal. That ...

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

Super! I have another one that I need to take down to put the magazine indicated back into it's slot properly...Hopefully it won't be as troublesome with the stock this time, but at least I have more knowledge. (Yes, I picked up another one. This one a 1950 in .300 Savage, almost at the end of produ...

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

Finally got it!!! So I methodically tried fitting each of the pieces separately to the stock...receiver less bolt spring, then with bolt spring, and trigger guard by itself...all fit the stock well (was a little spring action to the tang on the trigger guard. So no auger or other wood removal requir...

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

Hi Roger, Thanks for the suggestion about the clamps. I’m not sure that will work…the top and bottom tangs are already flush to sub flush with the wood…unless maybe I’m not understanding your method. I’m going to use some layout fluid to see if I can find the interference. I’ll try sticking the rece...

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

9.3SHooter, I'm too much of a newb to saw for sure, but I don't think there was any differences in how the stock mates to the receiver on the 8 vs 81 (someone chime in please if I'm wrong). I think it may have more to do with how each stock was fitted orginally (variation piece to piece) and how muc...

Re: Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

Hi Hibby83. No worries! Your thougths echo my own..."It fit before I took it apart." Yes, I've tried a lot of downward pressure (rifle vertical, buttstock on the bench) while trying to get the stock to seat further and get the bolt started, and tried lightly (and moderately) striking the b...

Stock Installatiuon troubles...advice needed

Hi everyone! I'm hoping that you all might be able to offer some help here. So I disassembled my first 81 ('39 in .35 Remington), gave it a good deep cleaning inside, and got everything reassembled ...except I can't get the fully seated and installed. The stock fit very snugly and evenly to the rece...

Re: New owner from Michigan!

That looks like a nice one. Welcome to the forum. I have a feeling that this Model 8 might not be your last. Dan I think you are correct LOL. My son and I were at a gun show over the weekend...Somebody had a nice looking later model 81 in 300 Savage for a stupid cheap price ($450). Like a dummy, I ...

Re: New owner from Michigan!

Is the boy old enough to shoot it once you get the ammunition? Oh yes...He's 22 and is the manager at the gun counter of a local sporting goods store. He's very excited about it too. Last night was spent de-crudding the trigger group and magazine, and disassembling the receiver parts. Tonight is ho...

New owner from Michigan!

Thanks for the add! I just became the new owner of a 1939 Model 81 in 35 Remington, and am looking forward to learning more on the gun (been reading a lot already on the thegreatmodel8.net, watching videos, etc). I really never knew anything about them, other than being able to recognize one as &quo...
