I agree with all the observations...definitely a double/over stamp. AZZ3 is the proper code there.
Nice rifle indeed!

Welcome Mgderf!
I concur with everything Hibby said about the repair code.
Regarding the photos, yes historically we have had a limit on the size of photo posted. I went ahead and changed that, however, to a larger allowable file size. Hopefully that helps other folks in the future!

what an absolute BEAUTY! The condition is remarkable for the age. I've said it many times, the very BEST looking of all Model 8 & 81's are the earliest production 1906-1907 guns. Yours is a gorgeous example! Worth a few pennies there!

Sad indeed, but good things for Jack.
I'd say if you someone sees a rifle in this collection that interests them, it is worth inquiring with Jack as he may still have it, and it may be for sale.

For many years my father owned a "Special Police" 81 formerly with the Nashville, TN Police Dept. This department didn't buy many of these, in fact we only have 3 known in the database. One day I'm contacted by a guy named Jimmy, and he tells me that his uncle served with the MNDP and he a...

Certainly, the quality of wood fell into various "grades" but there was variance there. And on that particular day, for this "C" grade, the assembler very possibly grabbed a higher grade wood than normal. However, of all the few 81C's I've seen, they all have exceptionally nice w...

Here is Hall5252's rifle. This is an authentic Model 81 "Special Police". The mystery is the magazine. It appears to be a very early Model 8 type (neither side has a side spring or provision for one). It would seem, this rifle may have originally been equipped with a detachable magazine an...

The early 8's are my favorite. A lot of guys shoot modern Hornady LeverEvolution ammo. I've always personally shot Remington or Federal soft point ammo in mine. I think at this point, most people shoot what they can get their hands on.

Model 8 - Factory Checkered "A" Grade
This rifle, although with a tapped receiver, has a lot going for it. Was certainly a wealthy man's rifle once upon a time. The combination of expensive sights, the factory checkering, the sling eyelets. As cool as an A grade gets!
