You need to make sure the magazine spring is in facing the right way, this is the most common cause of overrides. The spring is just backwards of the common Mauser spring in that the tail points to the rear.

I have shot a few IMR 4895 loads with 32 grains and a Lyman 200 gr. bullet with no problems. I do get better accuracy with the W/W 748 loads. They seem to work as good on deer as the factory jacketed bullets and will shoot into about 3" at 100 yards.

300 Savage has an operating pressure of between 46 and 49,000 psi and the 22-250 is over 50,000. Shoot ONLY mild loads in this gun if you value it. As to how it was done it's no trick to turn a duplicate barrel for a M8/81.

Find a nice piece of walnut and cut the damage area flat. Then glue on the walnut and shape it back to original. If you match the grain and use tinted acraglass you can make this repair almost invisible. I just finished one for a buddy last night.

Your headspace problem is case related rather than rifle related. I had the same problem with one lot of factory ammo that had the shoulder set back too far. You can either pull the bullets and resize the cases or shoot them and take a chance on some streached brass.
