Barrel lock and Barrel lock spring
Could someone explain the function of the barrel lock and spring. I have disassembled my Model 81 .35 cal (1939) having refinished the butt stock and decided disassemble the receiver while at it for a through cleaning and lube. I have misplaced the barrel lock spring (probably threw it out with the ...

Re: Need Model 8 Firing Pin for 35REM
Received my firing pin from Midway. The pin comes with this label on the package, "WARNING: this firing pin/striker
blank must be fitted by a competent gunsmith as most firing pins/strikers require minor fitting,"

Re: Barrel Lock Screw
Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the missing screw was not the barrel lock screw. The missing screw was a scope base screw, an old T-8 scope mount, one of 3 holes that were tapped into the lower part of the Model 8 receiver. The missing screw is the middle screw. I pulled another scope mount...

Re: Stock troubles
I can sympthize with those having but stock reassembly problems. I have an early model 81 that I hunted with. She was a closet queen with a nice lacqor finish. I was in a rain storm and got myself and the rifle wet. The stock finish turned milky and I decided to refinish it. I stripped the finish wi...

Re: New member (new .300s 81er)
Welcome new .300s 81er, you can look forward to learning a lot about your Model 81, John Brownings 'slast designed commercial rifle. I have a .32 Model 8 that has been a 3 generation hand me down and a .35 Model 81. These guns got me interested in semi-autos and I have acquired 2 SKS's, purchased fr...

Barrel Lock Screw
I am in the process of replacing a broken firing pin and finding a barrel lock screw for my Model 8 in 32 cal. This gun has been a safe queen for as long as I can remember. It belonged to my grandfather who died in 1942. My father would not let me hunt with it when I was young, guess he did not reli...

Re: Whats behind your buttplate?
Kind of like Christmas come early. I checked my model 8, 1910 crescent butt plate and found nothing. Not surprised as the stock has been refurnished. My 1939 Model 81 had no hole drilled in stock. My museum model 8, 1906 sn 118, had two holes bored in stock and within I found matches in a plastic me...

Re: Montana here we come!
No shame in taking the .44 as a backup to that .32 Rem. I'd keep a pickup between you and the buffalo. They can turn way shorter than a cow, no side stepping them. Know a fellow that was chased around his pickup twice before he could get in.

Re: BARREL WRENCH
I puzzled with the barrel wrench issue for a long time, secured a winchoke wrench and promptly torqued the ear off it, manufactured a spanner wrench from a grinder (fork wrench), broke that. The simple solution, with the barrel taken down from the rifle, retract the barrel (from the chamber end) and...

Re: Census
I don't exactly understand your post, but when I was shopping for my Model 81 I got a call from a fellow about my interest in these guns, he said How many do you have. I said one Model 8, and one Model 81. Oh, he said I have over 200. He was interested in how much I paid for the 81, and was critical...

I have become associated with a local museum as its treasurer following my retirement. The museum president learned of my interest in guns and said, "you will be our gun curator". The gun collection consisted of several guns from one benefactor and a single gun from another. I was delighte...

Re: Rem. 8 Bolt Carrier Chipping
I am guessing that the damage may have occurred when the bolt was out of its rotation alignment, and the bolt was released in its normal fashion (see my "caution" post a few posts ahead).

Caution
If you remove the barrel, operate the the bolt handle (cock the gun) and dry fire it, (not a good practice anyway as you can break the firing pin) you can be in for a big disappointment when you reassemble the rifle and operate the bolt release lever on the left side of the gun. The bolt closes with...

Re: Barrel Nut Wrench
I wanted to clean up my Model 81 barrel and spent a lot of time puzzling over how to free up the barrel bushing nut. I bought a winchoke wrench and promply ruined it. The bushing nut was froze on tight. I soaked the muzzle in penetrating oil, bought a # 38 drillbit, as close to the pin hole size I c...
