Barrel nut tool the easy way

Just finished and tested my barrel nut tool. Works Great even on a jammed nut. I do suggest penetrating oil of course...

Find a 3/4 6pt deepwell socket, I suggest the impact version. (no hard chrome plating to drill through)
Drill a #41 hole in the center of the flat for your "pin", I use the butt end of the drill bit. It needs to be a little less than a 1/4" from the end of the socket.

You can use pliers to pull it loose when done.

Use caution; if you cannot see threads in the barrel nut spanner hole it's probably over the key slot. DON"T push your pin in too deep, it'll lock in the key slot.

And it's still a deep well Socket

Now if I can just figure a way to make the spanner for the jacket w/o a lathe or mill....

there is another use for a socket, my 25 cal. 8 had a couple of heavy dents in the jacket. i stripped the jacket down and used a 16mm 3/8 drive snap-on impact socket on a long socket extension, and slid it down the barrel. i had to evenly and very lightly grind with a wizz wheel the black off of the socket to get it to go down the tube. the dent was in front of the peice that is made into the barrel jacket for the spring to rest on, and behind the threads at the end of the jacket, so i had to cut a groove in the socket with a bench grinder to slide past the peice in the barrel. it popped the dents out perfect.
