Brass not ejecting.

Post by Matt52 »

Hey everyone I recently bought a Model 8 chambered in 35 remington. According to the serial number info on this page it was made in 1907 serial number 26xx. I considered it a steal at 500 bucks its in really good shape for its age. However when it took it out to shoot the brass wouldn't eject and it seemed to lock open after every shot but I'm not totally positive on that because the bolt would ride forward and jam on the empty case that didn't eject. On the third shot the extractor came halfway out of the bolt. Nothing seems broken so that's good news lookin for some trouble shooting advise.

I would start by cleaning the bolt, if the ejector pin is dirty and sticking the extractor might not be able to remove the shell, also check your magazine indicator assembly if it misaligned with the mag it could cause the bolt to lock back, I'm thinking you might have 2 problems with what your saying but i don't have the gun in front of me to tell so its a shot in the dark keep us informed

Yea I'm not really sure what's up either probably gonna take it to a gunsmith soon hopefully it's something minor I hope to have it ready for deer season. It was so excited to get it then this happened but its par for the course for a 106 year old gun. I believe it's something minor so I'm hopeful.

Some time back, I had a failure to eject problem with a Model 81 in .300 Savage. Lubricating, etc., of the old ejector plunger did not help. I replaced the ejector plunger and spring and that did the job. I think there is a posting about it here somewhere. You do have to remove the bolt to do it, and there is a little "cut and try" required to get the correct spring length. I got the spring and plunger from Numrich, and the spring is a little longer than necessary to allow trimming (using a Dremel tool). I didn't really need a new plunger, but there's no extra work required to install one, so that's what I did. It's really not that difficult to do, but having a helper is recommended for the re-installation of the spring and plunger.

My ejector and ejector spring seem to be fine Im not sure how exactly its supposed to feel but it seems lively if that's the correct term. I it travels back and forth while depressing it with a screw drive and seems to have a good amount of tension behind it. My real concern at this point is why the extractor came out of the extractor groove. should I just put it back in and try again or should I have it replaced. I found some extractors that are oversized and need to be hand fit perhaps this would be a way to ensure precise fit and eliminate the extractor coming out.

Matt52, the extractor shouldn't be coming out. There are two little tabs on the extractor that fit into two grooves cut into the bolt carrier. Are they broke off? If your extractor is coming I'd definitely recommend a complete disassembly and thorough cleaning & inspection of the bolt & carrier components.

Nothing's broke tabs are still there. It's got me puzzled all around but I'm going to the gunsmith this weekend.
