Model 8 Marble? Lyman? type peep sight question

Post by vickersmaster303 »

Q:My model 8 is circa 1917 with the pistol grip type butt stock. It think it has what appears to be the original type Marble tang peep sight but not sure it may be the Lyman type. The sight does not seem to want to fold flat but wants to stay in the up position and also the aperture and post seems to lean forward towards the front sight slightly. I am not familiar with this sight. Can anybody tell me if this is normal or any info etc. thanks vickersmaster303

It sounds like you have the Marble's. There is a small tang in the front of the sight on the base that needs to be pushed rearward to lock the sight in the down position. Then to get it to go in the up position, push down on the sight and pull forward on the tang. To re position the sight to where it seems to be exactly vertical, the whole rotation mechanism has to be rotated. This is not hard to do and I could do it for you, but it is not easy to put in writing. DO NOT TAKE THE SIGHT APART, YOU WILL NEVER GET IT BACK TOGETHER. There are some very strong small springs in there. I do have the name of a guy that bought all of Marbles excess parts for these and does repairs on these. If you want to send it off to be repaired, contact Mike Maraccini at marblesfix@chartermi.net. This should be something to keep in mind by all of you if you have rifles with the Marble's tang sight. I sent one to him several years ago and his prices are reasonable and does good work. Ships fast also.
