Is my 81 an A, B, or C?

Post by Bruce Pennington »

Hey guys! I inherited an April 1948 .300 Savage 81 and am trying to determine whether it is an A, B, or C. It also has some strange stamps under the reciever between the handgrip and the ammo clip.

It came with a rubber shoulder pad, and a side-mount for a scope (actual scope missing).

Thanks for any help!

I also wonder what the "18" behind the trigger guard means?

Howdy and Welcome to the forum.

The marks at you are referring to are proof marks and have nothing to do with determining grade of the rifle. Without seeing better pictures of the wood on your rifle, my guess is it is a standard model or A. The B and C grades have checkered wood on the stock and forearm but I see no evidence of checkering on the forearm and didn't see the stock.

Thanks Jack. Here's a couple of pics. It has no etchings, has a rubber shoulder pad, and a sie-mounted scope bracket (scope whereabouts unknown).

The rifle is a standard issue. The mount is a Stith mount. Sarge756 might offer some help in the type of scope that would be period correct. You won't have any trouble finding the correct scope for this mount.
