barrell nut tightening

Seems there are numerous videos for dissassembly, but i have not found one for the correct proceadure to put the barrell jacket back togeather, most notably how to tighten the barrell nut, or how much. I have 6 model 8's, i want to dissassemble the barrells and clean them as i bet they have never been apart, i have noted that all six have a different amont of the barrell sticking out of the nut.

Buy a good tool for the disassembly, that's the first thing to do. Either the proper spanner wrench or Circle B Ranch's Pro-Tools. There's another good looking tool set out there I've seen also.

Reassembly of the barrel jacket is just done in reverse order of disassembly. The barrel nuts have teeth that engage the barrel nut washer, this is why when turning one you hear a ratcheting sound. I can't give you what ft/lbs of torque to apply, but just do them hand tight until the ratcheting stops. Barrel nuts need to be kept snug on these rifles. And I'd recommend if you take them apart only do 1 rifle at a time as different calibers had different length barrel nuts.

Thanks Cam, i have had them all apart at one time or the other, except the barrells as an old aircraft mech, i do not go into something that requiers as special tool with out it, got one on the way, so i can clean the barrells and shrouds, i think i will measure the position of the barrell nut before i tak them apart, one at a time, so when i go back they wil be where they started, as they all worked, that should keep em working.

I wouldn't worry how far the barrel nuts are sticking out now (some could be backed out on their threads). I'd just make sure when I reassembled that I snugged the barrel nut against the nut washer, meaning keep tightening the barrel nut until the ratchet sound stops. The barrel nut and washer need to be snug together.

Thanks cam, that is the first proceadure i have seen or hear.Just tighten till the ratcheting stops.

One thing to bare in mind when tightening the barrel nut is that when it stops, it is because there are no more threads on the barrel. over tightening could distort the threads inside of the barrel nut and cause gauling. That is not good. There is nothing that the assembly butts up against since everything is spring loaded. Just snug it up and the barrel jacket washer is designed to prevent it from backing off. Never has been a problem with any of my rifles.
