Pro-Tool barrel nut tool

Post by GTopp2 »

There seems to be a mention every so often of an "address" where the nice ratchet style tool for taking the barrel nuts off the Model 8/81 can be obtained. I need a recent address. It appears that my Model 81 has had the bottom three threads (at least) on the larger nut stake punched (punching into the shroud) in place with a square pointed punch. I have taken the outer nut off using (and fitting) a Winchester choke tube spanner wrench. The inner larger nut will not budge. I am convinced that this stake punching was done on purpose. I have drilled out or ground off stake punches on other firearms but I do not want to use this ultimate cure on my almost new Model 81. Has anyone ever come upon a similar situation? Are these barrel nuts that much of a bother?
Thanks

Hey Greg,

I've never heard of a barrel jacket bushing being staked, sounds like a tough job you got there. I have known the bushings to be difficult to remove after they've been on a rusty or well used gun for many many decades. I've heard of people soaking that end of the barrel jacket in penetrating oil for a day or two. But having or making the right tool is crucial to not damage the bushing. I don't know of any tools on the market, but Bob B. used to make some. If he's still selling them you can give it a try, circlebranch@cox.net
