Looking for a source for the typical plain grade stock for a Model 81 -- nothing fancy like a curved buttplate.
Anyone have a current source?

Try here: http://www.shop.macongunstocks.com/Remi ... 1_c115.htm
I`ve not used a stock from them for an 8 or 81 but did purchase one for a 99 Savage a few years back. Quality was good and was as they advertised 95% inletted. Fitting of a stock on a 99 or 81 takes patience.Just remember you can`t put back what you sand or chisel away so go slow. Noticed a complete set (used) on Fleabay with Buy it Now of $395 or best offer. Bit pricey.Looks like same guy is parting out the entire rifle.

Thanks for that link Joe. Now to find a butt plate and screws.
Re: Source for Model 81 stocks
If someone here doesn`t offer a spare add a search on Fleabay for the Buttplate. They come up on there often. Check out the listings as sometimes the sellers don`t know what model rifle their offering fits and just describe them as "Remington". You might find one by asking them to provide width and length and compare to your new stock.

Well I`d have to agree that it is pretty sad but I wouldn`t toss it. From the photo it appears that the cheek piece was glued on over the stock. Might be a chance to remove it ,refinish and salvage what you have. If the butt wasn`t cut back too much for the recoil pad an original buttplate may fit.

Bill I've seen A LOT worse. Perhaps the nicest thing about your stock. Look at where the wood meets the receiver, and the top "hump" of the comb...the stock doesn't look like it's had a stroke of sandpaper one to it. Don't see that very often. You could always find an original 81 buttplate (http://www.ebay.com/itm/REMINGTON-Check ... 3ab1d43ebd) and try to remove the cheek piece. Just an idea

Re: Source for Model 81 stocks
Guys, I will pull the recoil pad to see just how much damage there might be there. Unfortunately, the raised comb was inlet very deeply into the existing comb. If I cannot find a reasonable source for a butt replacement, I will just rasp it back down to the original comb line and refinish. By the way, this was the first 8 or 81 I had seen with the Redfield aperture rear. The others I have seen were all Lyman or Marbles.
Re: Source for Model 81 stocks
Good luck with your project. The Redfield sight required drilling some extra holes to mount it which to most is a negative. The positive side is that you have a fine sight that allows adjustment for windage that the Lyman and Marbles do not.
