Did anyone see that Model 8 sell for nearly $3000 on GB??

It sold tonight for like $2750. It wasn't anything special. Model 8 in .35 Rem made in 1908. It was in fine condition. But nearly $3000?? I could not believe it. Why so much?? I know .35 Rem is the desirable caliber so people can shoot the rifle, but come on. Is this the new normal?? Or just a bidding war?

I didn't see this either - maybe it was a D or E grade, or something EXTRA special. It may also have been a POE-gun, since we don't know anything about the specifics of the auction.

This model 8 was a very clean example of a 1908 in 35 REM. As far as the selling price. If you find the rifle that you have been wanting and dreaming of for years and it finally appears...you buy it! The search is over for this buyer and it'll soon be in his/her hands. This model 8 is a very nice example of a rifle that was enjoyed afield and well taken care of.

Yes, thats the one. Indeed, it was a clean example of a Model 8 from 1908 in 35 Rem -- but it has NO special features and still sold for nearly $3000.

I am still amazed/confused. The bidding hovered around $800-1200 all last week (reasonable) and then shot up to the final price. YIKES. Guess that guy REALLY wanted it.

Perhaps bidders are realizing the rarity of our ladies. After all total production from start to finish was less than 70000 for each model. While I can hope our investments appreciate, it will really hurt when that nasty Jackitis attacks again and again. Right in the left rear pocket......

What an outstanding Model 8 That gun made me pause and scrutinize because you just don't see Model 8's (especially 1908 guns) in that kind of shape. That's as close to a "like new" Model 8 as you're going to find. I'd say it does have special features, it's 107 years old and looks almost like it was made a couple years ago! The bluing aside, look at the condition of the wood, the fit to the buttplate, the cheeks, etc. The condition of the gun is what makes it so rare

I watched this auction carefully last week. I'm on gunbroker at least once a day 365 days a year. If you don't stay in touch with the market nationally,then you can't make intelligent decisions about your investments in your collection. That being said, I was taken aback by this piece and it's selling price. I could have purchased either of those model 8 D-grade rifle at the Tulsa guns how for 3500.00 each or 6000.00 for both. That may still be a decision that I regret,when I walked away. Neither one was mint, but they were certainly in excellent condition. This sale may be a double edge sword for us rem. Model 8 collectors/shooters. Only time will tell. But his could be a corner being turned as far as values are concerned. Thanks for your time,

Maybe the winner had a sentimental attachment to the rifle? I've paid cousins outrageous sums of $$ for certain family firearms that I wanted to retrieve before they were ruined, lost, or sold off.

The model 81 that sold for $1699.99 was a good looking rifle, but pricey for a standard grade model 81.

The other model 81 that sold for $1,349.99 was advertised with the beat up "Original" box, which was UNTRUE. The box was indeed an original Remington factory box, but sadly it was advertised as the "Original Box", leading the buyer to believe it was the original Model 81 factory box...and it was not an original Remington Model 81 box.

This is only my opinion, but I think the high selling prices lately, are a case of misinformed buyer's, not doing their "due diligence" before placing their bids. Once these prices are reached at auction, you always see a bunch of average condition Model 8's & 81's being advertised at "far above average" prices, where the seller's are hoping to "cash in" on the high dollar craziness.

I would suggest doing some research on past auctions & their selling price's, before spending the big money & pulling the trigger on a standard grade autoloader. We always see this when there isn't a lot of nice autoloaders available at auction and they're advertised far above the higher end of the rifle's value. At that point, someone will list a very nice autoloader that is far above the condition of any of the other autoloaders that are listed and it pulls in some really big money. This scenario is great for the seller, but not always beneficial for the buyer...unless this was the specific autoloader that the buyer just had to have in his collection.

It does seem that the model 8/81s in mint/like new condition in 35 Remington are going for a higher premium these days...$850-1400 from what I can tell on Gunbroker. Granted, one can always get lucky and score one for much lower, but people want this rifle in 35 Rem so they can shoot it, which is driving up prices.

I picked up a model 8, made in 1926 at a gun show here in Michigan for 650.00, it cleaned up real good, and that is the going price here, oh 30rem and I load for it what fun I am having !!

I agree with Bob @ S&S. I have been to several gun shows here in the mid west this late winter and have found the asking prices to be, lets say, optimistic. However I didn't really talk to the sellers as there was nothing I was truly interested in buying and I don't like wasting peoples time unless I am going to make an offer. Even if it may not be accepted. It will be interesting to see if there has been a real and lasting jump in values.
