Meanwhile, at the Gun Show...
So, I had this Winchester 1894 in .44 Mag that wouldn't hit a barn door from the inside, so off to the little gun show we went. It was the small show, with the big AGCA show next month or so, so I wasn't confident I'd see anything interesting there. Then this happened:

Re: Meanwhile, at the Gun Show...

It had the scope rail already on it and I had the rest of the mount at home, plus a low power scope.

ET in the barrel jacket says 1926. It had been better taken care of than some I've bought. It wasn't full of gunk or rust. Well used, but well maintained.
Range report later....

I like that rig a lot! What kind of scope is that?

A bushnell something or other. 1.25-4.5x. Looking at something more high speed later on.Hardrada55 wrote:I like that rig a lot! What kind of scope is that?

Shot about 2.5" at 100 yards before the barrel heated up. When it got hot the group went all to hell. Oddly, it preferred the 150 grain round nose over the 160 grain Hornady pointed nosed bullets.

Sir,
You didn't mention what powder you were using to load your 30 rems. Also what was your overall cartridge length.
My model 8s can be finicky about certain powders and or cartridge length.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

30 grains of 3031 and ocl of 2.525". I'm going to go to .32 grains because I'm starting to get indications that the bolt isn't moving quite briskly enough.Roger wrote:Sir,

Nice Lady, I find I like the lower power scopes in a rifle that will group well. It gives a great sight picture and you can see the background better. Check the barrel nut it could be a little loose.
Wish I had another low power variable scope for my ladies.

Sir,
Some of my 30 Cal. M-8s like slower burning powders . I use 3031 alot for many calibers. It's a very versital powder. If you have any, you might try win 760 or imr 4064. I also use Leverevolution powder with good results with the Hornady ftx bullets and actually other ones too.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Yes, I like these low power scopes, myself. I'm on the hunt for a better quality one. This Bushnell is ok, but a cheapie and I have no great confidence in it's ability to hold zero.Phyrbird wrote:Nice Lady, I find I like the lower power scopes in a rifle that will group well. I'm still playing with some loads and I use a lot of 3031 because I have a lot of it on hand. However, I did find a couple of pounds of 4064 lying about so I'll be experimenting with this later.
