So I was checking the operation of my model 8 after finally putting it back together. I bought some snap caps for it (someone made them out of real brass and bullets), shoved them into the mag, let the bolt go (and lock to barrel), and then started operating the charger. The first 4 rounds flew smartly but not too high to the right. The last round was not grabbed by the bolt. In fact, when looking at the front of the bolt it never really go all the way forward to lock with barrel. In other words, not matter how far back I hold the bolt before letting it go, it felt the extractor never rode over the rimless rim.
Why it does not like the last round?

Are you confident that the snap caps are sized appropriately?
Is it that particular snap cap, or is it any of them that happen to be last.

Confident is pushing a bit: I can stack them besides live rounds and they seem to be the same dimensions. With that, I have 5 of those caps and have swapped their order. So far only the last one is not being grabbed. I will number them and repeat the test again tonight so I can be more scientific.
FYI, the snap caps I got were https://fakebullets.com/shop/rifle-cali ... remington/, with the rubber insert, hole on the side, and rattle options.

Is the mag spring good and installed correctly
Re: Model 8 does not grab last snap cap
Good thought. I bought a late 30's 81 Rem in 35 Rem caliber a while back and had the same issue of improper cartridge feeding. Prior to a disassembly and cleaning, I tried shooting to see if all worked. Noticed right away that rounds didn't feed into the magazine as well as my two 300 Savage Rem 81's and the last two rounds were at times hanging up.
Disassembled, cleaned, reassembled, still not right. Took magazine apart and found the problem. Someone had once upon a time changed the mag spring and it wasn't the fact they had installed it incorrectly, but it was not a 8/81 mag spring. From pictures and such it appeared to be for the Remington 700 model rifles...same family, wrong model. Ordered one from Jack First (in fact found another on-line and ordered that one also for a spare, just in case as they are hard to find). Installed new spring and worked as designed.

Concerning your issue- if it's not the snap cap or a dirty chamber. I would believe it's the extractor. Does the extractor look complete "not chipped?" Start with what is free and easy to do before trying to "manipulate" extractor to fix/troubleshoot the issue.
I don't think it's related to being the last round to load.
