Here is something cool to look at . I just bought this from another member it's an April of 1949 mod 81 in 300 sav. It also has the Kreiger conversion on it which I really like. But this I find pretty cool. It has a Weaver KV Variable scope on it. The scope is 1" and is variable from 2 3/4 X 5 power it has fine crosshair with black dot reticle. Scope is nice and clear and rear eyepiece adjusts nicely for clarity. Also the scope has two bell ends and is mounted in a Styth mount. The scope was made from 1950 to 1964.
I just think it's cool as most 8s and 81s scopes mounted in Styth mounts whether in 7/8" or 1" have just straight end towards front not bell ends. The gun has been refinished so more a hunter than collector .
Anyway here are some pictures of the receiver and scope and mounts.
Thanks for looking !!!! John Taylor

Nice
If you please what is the OD of the scope bell in the front ring? I have a K4 that might fit the Stith I have with a large bell mount too.

Front bell appears to be 1 5/16" OD that's measuring with tape measure not calipers. John

Thats really neat, I like it!
I assume you have to remove the two screws from the mount on the jacket to take the rifle down?
Will that effect the zero?

Great looking rifle John, I REALLY like that scope setup!!! That's the first variable scope that Weaver came out with. In the little bit that I read on the KV scopes is that it's variable but not how most think, it's 2.75 or it's 5, not linear like later variables.
The neat feature about the Stith mount setup is that you take the rifle down exactly the same way as normal. The front of the scope sleeves into the front mount on the shroud. I personally haven't taken my Stith outfitted 81 down since cleaning it up and sighting in so I can't say how much of a point of impact change I would have.

About as sweet a hunting setup as there is!

Re: 1949 Mod 81 Kreiger with variable scope
I have both the Stith & the G&H. I KNOW
the G&H will maintain near zero when taken down. I don't currently rezero it unless it is way off, 2-5".
In my experience the Stith is very solid unless the alignment is way off from install. the slip fit of the objective should have little effect on the tube. Install misalignment would be seriously obvious with scope wear on the tube.
By the way most of the Stith's require the scope be disassembled to get the rear ring on.
