I acquired my model 8 a year or two ago.
I saw it in an online auction and was intrigued by the mechanics so I did a little research.
I soon found out that this is the gun (model) that took down Bonnie and Clyde.
Mine is not a law enforcement model.
I wish it did take a detachable mag, but alas it holds only 5 internally.
Chambered for the venerable .35 Remington, it forced me to add another caliber to the collection, not that there's anything wrong with that!
I was hesitant to try removing the barrel shroud without any knowledge about it's assembly, but after much online discussion with a couple other Model 8 owners, I've been assured that it is not that difficult.
I am glad to be here.
Hope to find out more about my model 8.
I'll post a few pics later
Hello from Indiana
Re: Hello from Indiana
Well, looks like I have no idea how to post pics on this forum.
Site says files are too big each time I try to post a pic.
My Model 8 has a 5 digit serial number starting with 611**
Date code shows A ZZZ 3
I've read the 3 indicates a factory repair.
I have not been able to decipher the ZZZ.
They are struck slightly off height of each other and bunched together.
Any knowledge or help with my date codes would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Mgderf.
I'm on your side with a detachable mag example, especially a Special Police version. Taking these rifles down isn't difficult but it's nice networking with people assuring it's done right.
As far as your repair code- I believe that one of the 3 Z's may have been a miss stamp, should only be 2 Z's (My opinion for your repair code is March 1953.) That is the latest repair code I've heard about on the forum for one of these autoloaders. Here is two links, one from the homepage of this site and one from Remington Society of America, the RSA link shows an extended scale that our page here doesn't reflect.
I believe that your rifle was likely made in 1929, the last rifle for 1929 61,467.

Concerning posting photographs. The sizing must be brought down significantly from normal. Some people have luck changing the size by emailing themselves the photos, then saving the now resized photo from their email. They now are appropriate size for posting.

Re: Hello from Indiana
Welcome Mgderf!
I concur with everything Hibby said about the repair code.
Regarding the photos, yes historically we have had a limit on the size of photo posted. I went ahead and changed that, however, to a larger allowable file size. Hopefully that helps other folks in the future!

1929 sounds about right.
Re: Hello from Indiana
Howdy again Mgderf.
That's a GREAT looking Model 8 !!! Your example is MUCH better condition than most 8's seen.
What I said in previous post about a miss/double stamp for the repair code appears to hold true.

Re: Hello from Indiana
Well now, that assessment doesn't hurt my feelings at all!
I knew it looked in good shape, but being the very first example I've seen...well, I just didn't know
Know.
Glad to know I got a decent specimen.
I believe I have a machinist friend who can reproduce a spanner wrench for the barrel shroud assembly.
Mine shoots just fine, but I want to make sure everything looks o.k. under that shroud.
Re: Hello from Indiana
Budget friendly is a Winchester WINCHOKE tool for the barrel nut and a snug fitting piece of flat steel 6-10" long for the barrel jacket bushing.
*I haven't personally used the WINCHOKE tool, I imagine a very stubborn barrel nut would bend that flat "stamped metal" tool
There's a gentleman on our page (1913Model8) that sells a well made barrel takedown tool. It's not cheap but the quality of it is reviewed to be very good by forum members.
As always with old guns, read the procedures and take your time doing so. There isn't much for replacement parts out there.

Re: Hello from Indiana
I agree with all the observations...definitely a double/over stamp. AZZ3 is the proper code there.
Nice rifle indeed!
The below tool is the finest 8/81 tool currently in production...
