Remington 81 E - Expert Grade

Post by 54bullseye »

Well this a is new gun to me and a quite rare gun I would say. According to Cam in
the "Grades of 8s and 81s" this is one of two 81 E grades to surface so far from what he has seen. This one I bought from another "Great mod 8" site member. He bought it back in 2022 off GunBroker. The gun has had it's wood refinished not because the previous owner wanted to but who ever owned it before him did a disastrous job refinishing it !!! The finish was all crinkly and raised up and the checkering was full of finish so it looked horrible. The person I bought it from did a beautiful job on the refinish it just a little glossy for me. But for such a rare gun I love it. I am going to try and tone it down a bit.
Serial number is "2285" so a 1936 gun first year of the 81s.I stand corrected barrel code is CF so April of 1937 gun. Gun is in 35 rem and all parts are serial numbered correct. The forearm is marked 2285 with a 5 stamped for grade of wood. It also has an "EG" stamped in it we think for Expert Grade ?? Butt stock and butt plate marked as well all correct.

I will post a bunch of pictures for you all to look at ! Hope you Enjoy.
Thanks !! John Taylor

Well John, You’ve done it again! What a magnificent piece. My only question is, what member did you get this gun from? I know it’s none of my business, but I’m just nosy. This is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced or owned. I’d love to see it in person someday, but Massachusetts is a long trip from Iowa. But you never know what the future holds. Congratulations on a beautiful acquisition!!

I didn't want to post member who I bought it from and who did the beautiful refinish job with out his consent so we talked last night and there was no problem. I bought it from Bob Pajtas ( S and S Huntclub ) and he found it on GunBroker back in 2022. It was in rough shape when he got it !! Thanks Bob ! John Taylor

And Bob Pajtas ( S and S Huntclub ) is a 8/81 wizard. Unbelievable change from its previous condition.

Hello 8/81 fans -
I'm new to the forum and currently have one model 8 (approx 1911 based on serial number) and one 81 Grade E (May, 1940).

The 8 was my Grandfather's gun, then my father's, now mine and someday (God willing) my son's.

The 81 - I purchased from a friend of my father's when I was 12 (back in 1977) with my paper route money. My Dad took me to visit Sever Bang in an assited living apartment (he was in his 80's). He had a wood/glass gun cabinet with a few guns but I wanted his 81 becasue it looked like my Dad's gun (my middle brother had one also) I felt bad because Sever had realized he was never going to hunt again. He had a stack (15 or so) 35 rem boxes full of ammo next to the gun. He gave me two of them with the gun. I offered to buy the rest but he wanted to keep them in case he got another 35. I never used the any in the boxes he gave me and I still have them. My Dad had concerns over the fact they were probably 20 years old and didn't want me to use them. Anyways - here are some photos. Enjoy.
