Theodore Layman detach mag M81

Post by chas1949 »

I believe I have acquired a Theodore Layman modified M81. Originally thought maybe it was a Krieger variation until checking John Henwood’s
book
Anyone have any thoughts or info on this.
Is it a Layman, Krieger or possible gunsmith mod.

Hi Chas, thanks for the photos. To confirm, this is NOT a Layman detachable magazine. If you want to read up on the original(s) please refer to the thread below...

Your conversion, however, isn't a one-off though. I found in my records another rifle with a very similar design style. I do not know anything about these...but most likely a conversion done by an individual/gun shop in a small batch.

Thank you Cam.
I did find more on the Layman and the one I have is not one.
The safety lever stop is the same as both of my Krieger conversions,a pin in the trigger plate.
The mag release button looks like a modified M11 safety button riveted to a piece of flat spring that serves a mag latch. Works quite well.
