Late model 8 C-grade Rifle

Post by 54bullseye »

Here is a neat and very late production model 8 rifle in 32 Rem. It has the semi pistol grip or flat knob pistol grip style butt stock. It's the only C-grade I have seen in that configuration. According to barrels date code BE it's a 1936 manufacture date, The serial number 65991 puts in in 1932 but I believe coming from the custom shop that's not unusual to see. I am told you go by the date code rater than the serial but if any one knows different please let me know.

The rifle is in nice condition but has seen some use showing some dents and scratches in stock. Bluing is pretty darn nice. A couple notable things about gun. It has model 81 style front and rear sights. For some reason it appears the 32 rem caliber marking on the barrel extension is hand engraved ?? Don't know why ? Also it has the plugged hole in bottom of barrel jacket for the front sling swivel like the 81s.

It also has really nice cheeks on it. The wood to metal fit is very nice with wood being proud of metal most everywhere !! The checkering is sharp and crisp for the age of the gun. All and all a nice model 8 rifle !!!

I will post a bunch of pictures so please reply with any comments and thanks for looking ! Hope you enjoy. John Taylor

Hey John, As I said in my text, this is one nice rifle. I personally like 32 Remington caliber and have killed several Iowa deer with it through my M8s.Im sure it is a very special rifle, considering every thing about it. Thanks for sharing.

C-grades are jawdroppers to me...yours is a beauty!

I checked some of my files and found a few flat-knob C grades as examples from collections and the web. I've never done a deep dive into this configuration but it's not common. As you can see some have cheeks and other don't.

I have a C grade rifle with a flat bottom pistol grip stock like this.

Hey guys, I’ve had some flat knobs over the years . None were C grades. All were later production. I believe that flat knob C grades are some of the more scarce M8s. Mine were all 35 or 32. I wonder if there is any correlation between production numbers late in the production cycle of the 8. Just a random thought. Any comments will give us old guys something else to talk about.
Thanks for your time
