Hibby's 1st first year Autoloader

Post by Hibby83 »

Hello gentleman.

The leaves are falling and the bucks are rutting. Good luck to all the sportsman going afield. I also wish the best for the friends and family of the group as the year draws closer to an end.

I took a moment to grab some pictures of my first 1906 "introductory year" rifle. I also added a couple accouterments to spice it up. A box of UMC 35 Remington Autoloading that was only offered from 1906-1907 and an original brass clip.

While visiting John Taylor "54Bullseye" earlier this year, I brought up "for the tenth time" that he should sell me his Autoloading Rifle serial #734. My inquiries didn't start until he aquired a excellent example "serial #245." If he hadn't upgraded to an earlier serial rifle i don't believe I would've been able to pry this from his hands.

It's a wonderful condition 1906 rifle that stood the tests of time. I imagine it didn't get much use by the owners.

John put in some work to get appropriate sling studs to fill the very old threaded hole in buttstock and boss in forearm, a sight blank and a Williams peep "which it was already drilled for."

More pics. Picture with me proudly holding the rifle was taken in John's driveway.

Within a week of getting home from my trip, I did a functions test and some target practice with my reloads. The group pictured was my best 5 shot group out of five targets at 40 yards. Certainly a shooter! The bore is second to none in my collection MINTY*.

Hobby, I could be mistaken, but I believe that m8 belonged to me for many years. If it is my old rifle, then it came from Utah and an old school collector that I dealt with ,back in the old Gunlist days. I was always proud of that gun.
Thanks for your time

Hey everyone !! Yes Roger that was your rifle and like Hibby said only reason I let it go was serial # 245.
viewtopic.php?t=6403&sid=8d83b96692986c ... 7405e8f6db

If it wasn't for the Williams sight I probably would have kept it unfortunately the Williams sight was a later add on and it needed to be drilled to install. It is still a beautiful rifle Hibby !! I was glad to find # 245 which seemed untouched and in nice condition so the money for #734 came in handy.
I couldn't have sold it to a nicer guy or any one more into 8s and 81s than Hibby. Glad you own it now Luke . Thanks ! John Taylor

Thanks MinnesotaDan. Was resting off a tree, of course my hand between the bark and the stock. None of my other autoloaders responded that well to my reloads right off the bat/at all.

Howdy Roger. Yes it was. Certainly one to be proud of! There's a sticker on the buttplate showing DAVID W***. Was he a a Model 8/81 collectoror, or luck into finding this one?

Thank you John, I really appreciate it. All the same can be said about you! I'm still hunting/searching for your next rare/hard to get of the autoloaders.

One other thing to add- John pointed out a detail i forget in text. I had a lapse of memory, first year guns aren't able to use stripper clips. It looked good for the photos though...hah

Hey Luke, Dave was a baker from Ogden ,Utah. I don’t remember his last name, but we did several deals back in the Gunlist days. He was a serious collector.
Thanks for your time
