Hello all,
I'm Dave from Southern Ontario, Canada. I was gifted a co-worker in my previous career's father's rifle about ten years ago now. It had hung on a wall as a decoration for a long time and thus not oiled in the family farmhouse. The wood and barrel sleeve were rough, the bottom of the stock was previously broken and repaired with two nails and wood glue, which did not hold. I have only gotten around to doing something about it recently. However, about 7 years ago i thought i was motivated and disassembled the rifle. Unfortunately in the process the forearm screw went AWOL (Now I regret not looking harder for it at the time before it was probably consumed by the vacuum).
It is a .35 Remington gun with no fancy receiver/wood work and the stock is not the pistol grip style. I will try and add some photos though it is currently in pieces. I did purchase Brownells stock repair screws and though i did not use their acraglas adhesive i did use JB Weld Wood Weld as a substitute and the repair came out decent. The barrel sleeve has a fair bit of pitting but not deep just ugly, however at least the actual barrel bore is bright and shiny and clean. My biggest issue is going to be coming across the forearm screw. If anyone could post a model 8 screw picture it'd be hugely appreciated. Anyway thanks for adding me to this forum! Merry Christmas!

Welcome to the forum DBnag9130. I assume that your forum handle has association with the 'ol Mosin?
Here's a photo of the forearm screw for a Model 8.

Thanks for the photo! The screw I had was not the sling screw style, I recall that much. Ive found a screw that matches the threads on the forearm/fore-end escutcheon threads, but not the threads that attach it to the barrel shroud which seemed to be a larger diameter. But at least that gives me something to keep my eyes open for a gun show parts bins, etc.

Would be nice to have a picture of the rifle. A straight butt stock screams it’s a model 8 but would like to see the front stock. Sounds like someone else lost the original retaining screw and possibly used a model 81 screw or had found some other screw that worked.

Stock, stock repair, fore-end top and bottom.

Re: Ontario New Member
Good luck bringing that one back into service.
From your post, I gather the forearm escutcheon thread size is different than that on the shroud.
I don't need more photo's but I will assume that someone either swapped an 81 shroud on the rifle, OR drilled out shroud boss* to a larger screw fixing a forearm to the gun.
It doesn't make sense that those two parts were together though, because you said the screw you currently have works on the forearm itself, but it's too small for the shroud thread. I'll say with that it seems you need to open the forearm escutcheon hole size to get the size screw for the shroud.
^-"my opinion"

Re: Ontario New Member
The screw I found that works with the escutcheon is literally an old light switch plate centre screw. I feel like in my memory that the "screw" that held it on that it came with was two pieces, like a screw into a screw. Im not sure what to do. Maybe this is more a gunsmith problem. Ive repaired and refinished a couple rifles but was never missing parts. Thanks for your help.
Re: Ontario New Member
Forgot to mention that the barrel shroud boss for the fore-end screw when i look into it almost appears as if it was tapped for a larger screw because the bottom of the opening seems narrower and cylindrical but theres no threads left down there.
