John W Hession's Autoloading Match Rifle
John W Hession's Autoloading Match Rifle
Good morning gents. I followed this auction the last couple days, it ended this morning.
Congratulations 54Bullseye.!.!. I'm looking forward to some photos once you get this in hand.
I referenced the third print of the John Henwood book page 115.
I'm trying to track down photographs online of John Hession holding this particular rifle, no luck yet.
Cool to see such a rare piece go to a member on this page.

Re: Full-Stocked Match Rifle "prototype"
I am going to post some pictures of the Prototype Full stocked Match Rifle serial
#14410 a 1909 gun. Notice the stick on numbers put on the stock at the Remington archives. I think I will leave them on and have no idea what they mean ?? The gun is in nice condition for it's age. Bore is very nice as is the wood surrounding the barrel and shroud even though it's thin and old. The Krag sight works good and has a peep sight for the long shots.
Very cool old Military style rifle that I believe may be a one of a kind. I still want to pull receiver action and barrel and spings out of shroud as I am sure they will be all gumbed up with old oil. I am hoping my buddy Hibby will come up from PA to give me a hand with that. Enjoy the pictures and thanks for looking !!

Re: Full-Stocked Match Rifle "prototype"
Here is my last picture of the gun. Sorry about the back ground and lighting for these pictures as my picnic table is still under cover !! That is where I get the best results for pictures. The gun is marked "25-35 rem" which is neat !! Also remember you can see the gun pictured on page 115 in the last edition of the Remington model 8 book by John Henwood . Anyway enjoy ! John Taylor

Re: Full-Stocked Match Rifle "prototype"
Thank you for posting the pictures, that rifle is truly amazing!
I agree with leaving the stickers on as part of the history, if you removed them you would likely be left with ugly marks on the stocks anyway.
I wonder, are the handguards two pieces? Top and bottom?
Or are there joints under the barrel bands?

Re: Full-Stocked Match Rifle "prototype"
Thanks for the photos! Very cool, indeed. The purpose of hand guards is protection against a hot barrel, but also to provide a grip when thrusting with a bayonet. I wonder how they would have done a bayonet mount. The hand guard also enables the rifle to be used as a club after you’ve run out of bullets. I would think the forward swivel would be open, as this is typically a stacking swivel. As the note says, maybe this prototype was specifically for target testing with the military sights.
