New on this forum-- I just got an old model 8 up and running
Well , an elderly friend of the family gave me this gun a couple weeks ago and said that it was his uncle's old deer rifle. It had some surface rust , but looked to be in good shape. I checked around this site and figured out it was a 1921 30 cal model 8 , (gotta love the internet) and i just ordered some ammo from Buffalo Arms co. and am looking forward to taking some deer and hogs off of my S. Texas ranch near Cotulla. It has not been fired in at least 40 years but seems to function just fine. I took it apart and checked everything out. I think it is the standard model and it appears to be all original with no modifications.
Where else other than Buffalo Arms can I get the 30 cal ammo?
Any idea about how much it is worth?

Howdy,
That's a pretty rifle. Have you looked into reloading .30 Remington? Remington makes brass, and you can use .30-30 data. It is a pretty simple process. The cartridge really shines with a spitzer.

Yea , I think I will look into reloading for this gun.
I ordered 3 boxes of ammo and plan on saving the brass.
I plan on shooting it to reduce the Doe population on my ranch in S. Texas.

I started Loading 30 Rem for my Model 8.
It took about 6 months to get it together.
I ordered 100 RDs of brass.
I located some dies.
Discovered that loading data if for 30-30, which is easy to find.
I allready had 4831 powder that I used for loading .270. so being a tight wad I deciced to use it.
Using Spear #10 manual , I decided on 32 gr powder.
I decided to use 170 gr bullets. I observed that there was not much room in the case for powder, using pointed bullets. I have been unable to find round nose bullets. So, I take 180 gr bullets and cut off the tip to make it 170 gr. The bullets fit fine. Work fine. I still have accuracy issues that I am trying to figure out. But it all works.

Viper, try Gads custom cartridge. He's the most reasonable I've found.
"The sound of shot sweeping through the air toward you is impressive though. I'll give you that. It's like being swatted with the broom of God."

At the San Antonio Gun Show at the Shrine Temple last weekend, a guy had one box of old .30 Rem Winchester Silvertip for $35.00. Probably not a bad price, but I didn't buy.
