Seeking Information

Post by ChippewaStew »

I have my fathers 30 Remington - - appears to be an 8/81 based on pics I've seen - - how can I determine which it is? There is no model number stamped anywhere on the gun - - does have 30 REM stamped on the chamber - - s/n 47299. Can we fire anything other than 30 Remington through the gun? I have a box on 30 REM 170 GR CORE-LOCT SP ammo, but cannot find this anywhere. Can I use 30-30 REM? Thanks!

Hey ChipewaStew,

The determination should be fairly easy for you. Many of the early issues of these rifles did not have a Designation such as "Model 8" stamped on the rifle. If Remington did stamp the Model, I have usually found it in front of the roll stamping on the barrel jacket and it simply stated "Model 8". In later years Remington began stamping the "Model 8" on the left side of the receiver under the Remington name. If the rifle is a model 81, the rifle will have the words "Model 81" stamped on the left side of the receiver and is usually under the words "Remington WoodMaster". With the serial number you provided, I would suspect the rifle is a Model 8 issued in 1923.

I am not an expert on the ammunition for these rifles, but it is my understanding that Remington did away with the 30-30 designation in the early years so as to remove confusion with the Winchester 30-30 which has a different case. I am not aware of any 30-30 Reminton ammunition available today. If you have a box with that designation, I would suggest that it is vintage ammunition and should not be used. If you can provide some pictures of the cartridge head and the box, there are some experts here that will help you with the determination. The 30 Remington ammunition is no longetr manufactured and hasn't been for many years. You can find some suppliers that have reloaded the 30 Remington. Much of the 30 Remington available today uses resized cartidges fron the .32 Remington. I suggest you follow up your posting asking for additional information about finding ammunition for your rifle. I will say that the .30 Remington is a sweet shooting rifle. Good Luck.

Can you put a picture up of the rifle? If it is marked .30 Remington(or Rem), then that is the ammunition you need. .30-30 is a completely different cartridge design that companies still sell ammunition for(including Remington), and will not function in a .30 Remington gun. The only sources of ammo are buying new old stock on the gun auction sites, buying from a custom reloader, or reloading your own.

Thank you for the quick replies. I will try to get a few pics and upload, but it definitely appears to be a Model 8. I called the Remington factory in Illion, NY and they also said to use only 30 REM so will have to search sites and watch posts for availability as we have 17 rounds left in the box. We did fire three rounds through it [first time in probably 30+ years] and everything works just fine. Now needs a good cleaning/oiling and will probably be put away for another 30 years :)
