Has anyone heard the model 8 called the "pear burner"?

sheepherder, you piqued my interest because I had never heard that nickname attributed to the Model 8. I did some google searching, and sure enough I found somewhere in history Frank Hamer & other border patrol agents supposedly used that term because of the muzzle flash. I think that's pretty interesting because of all the guns I've had the pleasure of shooting, I never thought the 8's & 81's created much muzzle flash at all (shortened carbine versions are the exception). Thanks for the heads up though.

Thanks Cam. And thanks for the # for your dad. We had a great visit yesterday. I have an ex Texas Ranger friend who ask me to check his model 8 out and it looks to me that I have found the right place to do some research on it. The serial # is 46515. Looking forward to visiting with you again. Also looking for reloading data and some brass because my friend wants to shoot this piece of history. Thanks again.

I'm real glad you and dad got connected again...a good ole jarhead visit!

The serial number 46515 puts the rifle's production in the early 1920's. By that time Remington began stamping "dates codes" on rifles. The date code will give the month & year of production. If present, the date code on a Model 8 is stamped on the left side of the gun on the jacket head (where the barrel jacket & receiver meet). This code is typically 2-3 letters.
