1950 with high S/N

New guy here. Just snapped up a nice 35 with a S/N higer than listed on the S/N data page. Barrel code DWW puts it in Sept 1950 with the S/N 55653. Thats 72 higher than the lasr number listed of 55581. Anyone know just how high these go or are we in the world of the unknown? I'll Post Pictures when I pick her up. My guess is she.s about 95% or higher condition.

Sounds like youv'e got a nice rifle!

I can't recall the highest SN I've seen, but here are a couple high numbered rifles along with their mfg dates. There are rifles made later than these.

I have a 1950 Model 81 in .30 Rem with a SN in the low 55,900s. No idea why the "Official" last SN given is obviously incorrect.

According to John Henwood, "Unfortunately no log book of serial number assignments for the Model 81 has yet surfaced. The best we can do is to use factory figures, which are probably fairly close to the actual production" (p.94). Those factory figures are what we have published here on the website, going up to serial number 55581.

The highest recorded serial number in Henwood's book is #57949. There may even be some higher.

I was wonderining about the serial numbers also. The serial number on my 81 is 56167

I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that in his book, John Henwood also talked about some rifles being made up from parts on hand as orders were received after 1950. This being caused by delays in the introduction of the new semi auto rifle( m740???) I'm not sure if he knew for sure how long they went on building m-81 s past 1950. My memory isn't too good anymore! I do know that it was a few years until Remington got the bugs all worked out.
Personally,my highest m-81 serial # is 55300.
