My first Model 81

Guys

I got my first Model 81 Woodsmaster 300 Savage yesterday.

It was rough around the edges, but some oil and 0000 steel wool removed the surface rust and the oil loosened up the action. The wood is checkered and in decent shape. There is no engraving on the metal.

I am going out to shoot it this morning to test function. It has been drilled and tapped on the barrel for a Weaver rail. I will be mounting a Burris or Leupold scout scope.

I also got 4 boxes of vintage Winchester 150 grain bullets with the gun. I can't wait to shoot it!

I will try to post some pics later.

Well it fired! I loaded up three cartridges in the magazine and chambered one. It shot and cycled smoothly with no hint of wanting to double fire or ejection problems. Maybe in the next couple of weeks I can accuracy test, but turkey season starts in 12 days so I may get side tracked.

Randy's Recommendation - and you can take this for what it's worth -

Hang onto that "vintage ammo" - you never know what it will be worth at some point in the future.

Go buy yourself a box or two of Remington Core-Lok't. I've found the available at several gun dealerships (Academy, for example) here in Central Texas. I prefer 150 grain while others favor 180 grain. Use the new stuff for your accuracy tests and hopefully when you hunt for deer later on this year.

But that's just my $.02 worth.
