Took my "new" model 8 out today. Not a really great start I was given18 rounds of real 25 rem. umc ammo. tried firing 8 , I got six light strikes and two fte. Gawd knows how old this ammo is,as it doesn't look to have been reloaded. As soon as I can break her down (takedown screw is soaking in kroil) I'll check for gunk in the bolt and the rest of the innerds.
Question 2 What sort of buttplate does a grade 1 1911/12 model 8 have. Mine has a Bishop Stock plate that I'm pretty sure isn't stock. It will undoubtedly be the c shaped one that I haven't been able to find.
The rifle shoots minute of milk jug at 100 yds. I guess I'll call Buffalo Arms Mon. and get a couple of boxes of ammo coming .

Give her a good cleaning and some lubrication and go from there. These old guns can be very gummed up with old oil and powder fouling. In the process you can check for any obvious worn, broken or missing parts. Not uncommon to find some things assembled improperly as well.

Model 8's came with a number of different buttplates. The hard rubber buttplate was very common in the early years of production but again, several others were optional.

The link below is a reproduction of a Model 8 buttplate. I have one of these on a rifle and it's good quality and cheaper than an original.

Thanks for the input. All that I've ever ( except for ARs and G43s) really worked with are Mil Surp bolt actions. It's kind of amazing how much went into these older designs. Now all I need is some more brass and a set of dies. It's sort of funny that had I not tried to shoot this rifle, I could have happily sold it. Now that I know it has problems, I'll have to get it operating before I think about selling it. I enjoy gun shows to much to spend my time there looking over my shoulder. PS the butt plate shipped today.
