Occasional light primer strike

Post by texassako »

I took my Model 8 out to the renge yesterday to run a box of ammo through it to see how she shoots. First round did not fire, ejected it and the rest went fine. Reloaded the magazine with the light struck round going first, no problems. Rest of the box had one lightly struck primer per reload. I am not very familiar with semi autos, and the renge officer had a few ideas to research. I remember two misfires where the round did not eject when I pulled on the bolt, but did when I closed it back on the round. I saved one unfired but chambered and 2 of the lightly struck unfired rounds to check the ammo. You can see where the firing pin just slightly scratched the surface of the primer in the unfired round; so I don't think length is an issue? Could it just be a sticky action, bolt not closing all the way, and need a better cleaning than my first go around? I also noticed the bolt stops 1/2" from closed sometimes when closing and have to give it a bit of a push. The good news is the stock repair held up well. Overall not a good day with 3 out of 5 guns having issues(one revolver keyholing and another with a mushroomed firing pin).

On the other hand, a day at the range is better than a day.... Well, it's just plain a great day! Like today. Sun broke out here this morning, your post has reminded me its time to load'em up and go shooting! 8-)

Did you shoot MOD (minute of deer)? (Ah, see you answered that in the other post - good on you.)

Will be watching to see what the issue was or folks think the problem might be, thanks for sharing.

Problem solved, I believe. The little screw you are not supposed to take out when taking the rear stock off was not screwed in all of the way. In my post about fixing the stock I said it was buggered up and not screwed in. In my haste I did not get the threads chased all the way up the screw and it was a couple of turns out still when it felt tight. Well, since that screw tensions the spring, those couple of turns created a lighter spring. I don't think this gun was stripped down and cleaned internally in a long time judging by how much crud a box of rounds knocked loose after the first cleaning while I fixed the stock.

Love it when a plan comes together. Keep us posted regarding the next range trip and the "fix".

The rains got serious here, I did not make it out - couldn't even drive through the "rivers" to get to shoot! Strange weather.
