S? and P with circle?

Post by s ruppa »

first off, i am a new member and have to say, the website is fantastic! awesome info.

i have a model 8 35 cal. i used the website to look up the age. the serial number is 8233. so it looks to be 1908. there are two other marks i cant figure out though. there is a P with a circle around it above the serial number. below the serial number there is a S and below the S another P with a circle around it. this information is all on the bottom of the gun in front of the magazine. there is no checkering on the stock or anywhere else on the gun. also no engraving or detailing in the metal. the rear site has a patent date on it july 3 1902. the barrel has patent info on it but no other markings.

any info other that the date available for this great piece. grade?

thanks

Steve,

Welcome to the site, we're glad you've found it useful.

The markings you describe are assembler/fitter stamps and are correct. They don't really mean anything other than various parts and fitting of those parts passed inspection during assembly. Sounds like your rifle has its original rear sight too, cool :)

Hope that helps!

Mr Ruppa, I'm a "newby" also and like you I've learned a lot from this site.
One big thing I've learned while here is an excellent book to buy is
"The great Remington8 and model 81 autoloading rifles" by John Henwood.

In its 2nd edition, if theres such a thing as a "bible" for the model 8 this is it.
In his book Mr. Henwood has an extensive chapter on markings for these rifles.
Covering caliber markings, barrel jacket, reciever markings, and the ones you question
assemblers, fitters, and inspectors marking. Theres even a section on the history of these
markings as well as a review of interior as well as the exterior marks seen on both model 8's and 81's.
Lots of photo's also.
Really recommend this fine book to round out your knowledge of these guns.
Worth every nickel ;)
