What size and thread type is the screw needed to mount a peep sight on a 81?
The hole on the back of the receiver for a factory peep, seems to be something unusual.

Thanks, i book marked the site.
I`m trying to find one local so i can put the sight on today.
I have a gunsmith bud in town that has a screw set so he should have one if it`s a standard thread.

Ordered the screw, wonder why Remington had to make that screw an odd ball thread.

Pitchy don't know why but original ones are very hard to find. I had a parts dealer who used to have them, but I bought his last one last yr.the place you ordered from looks to be the best coarse of action now. It kind of reminds me of Ford's motor corp. @ their planned obselete parts deals.i've been a Ford man all my life.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Thanks guys, made a aperture from a Allen head bolt.
The size is a little smaller but it screws in tight.
The sight picture is clear and crisp, i couldn't`t see the thin walled circle without one.

Thanks Roger, soon as i get that base screw i`m going to try her out at 100 yards weather permitting.
I have a 50 yard range that i can shoot out the garage window.

Thanks, the allen screw i found wasn`t quite the right size but fit and hand tightened fine.
I put a drop of blue lock tight on it also and i think it will work fine.
Been so dern broke lately or i would of ordered one from the same place i ordered the base screw from.
But it`s fun to make stuff too.

Does anyone know the actual thread pitch used on the screw? I ordered one of the repro screws from Apertures 'N' More for my Lyman sight, but it only goes about halfway in my Model 8's receiver before meeting serious resistance. I'm afraid of stripping the head of an $8 screw so I backed off and let the receiver hole soak in Kroil for a few days - still no luck. I'm thinking the receiver threads need to be cleaned & sharpened with an appropriate tap?

John Henwood addresses the thread size in his book ,but I don't have time to look it up now

No idea why so many earlier guns used screws of a proprietary nature rather than standardizing threads. I guess that would have been too simple, but I imagine Winchester didn't want anyone buying screws from Remington to fit their guns. Even a slight difference in thread pitch mismatch will cause problems. Not a good idea to do this unless there is an emergency, but one could drill out an odd thread-sized hole slightly and re-thread it to a close standard SAE or metric size. I have needed to do that on occasion.

I took the time to look up your answer in Henwood's book.
3/16" x36 ,but that's the plug screw size. Proceed with caution

3/16-36 is indeed an odd size. Victory Machinery, where I get my odd taps and dies, don't show anything closer than 3/16-32 in stock. But if you need it badly enough, they will make up taps and dies in any size you want for a substantial price.

I tried browsing around McMaster-Carr and MSC Industrial, only to see that Brownells carries a 3/16-36 plug tap for $3.
