Model 81 Serial number Barrel-Receiver question

Hello there,
I just picked up a Model 81 and had questions on the serial numbers and chamberings. The serial number on the reciever is 74XX which I think is a 1939 number. Here is the crux- the barrel is 300 savage with three digits -491- and the code is RSS which is Nov 1947. Pretty sure it is a parts gun, however the reciever will pick up and feed 300 savage, but I have not fired it.
Could the reciever be a 300 savage? Would the 32,35 & other recievers cycle the 300 as well?
It was my intention to shoot this rifle but I might have been hornswoggled!

Thanks
Nathan

Most of us have ended up with a parts rifles or two, especially when we first started. I'm no expert or gunsmith but I think you are OK.

The receivers were basically the same. The barrel and springs inside the tube/shroud around the barrel were different smaller for the 25, 30, and 32 and larger for the 35Rem and 300 Savage. If it is picking up and feeding, my thought is that it was either a replacement barrel and was already a 300Sav or it was a 35Rem, either way no problem. I'd shoot it.

Oh, and welcome aboard. :D
