I just recently unearthed my wives grandfathers Model 8. I was wondering if the stripper clips are required? It looks like you could still load it. I plan of having it fully restored.

These rifles are very easy to load without the feeder clips. Just put the cartridge in vertically just forward of the mag side clips, press down and lean it forward. The magazine will almost suck it in. That is why most clips were discarded and are now hard to find. ROB

Charger clips are more useful in keeping loose ammunition from clicking around in your pocket when you're hunting than anything else. The use of clips in military rifles served a valid purpose in allowing more rapid reloading in combat. The Spanish-American War proved that, when the round-at-a-time-loading U.S. Krag-Jorgensen rifle went up against the clip-loading Spanish Mausers - and came up short. But it's not likely that anyone using a Model 8 or Model 81 will ever need the speed of clip loading. Original Remington clips are now scarce and expensive when found. The fastest and easiest method of loading an 8/81 magazine without a clip was previously described.

There are at least nine different variations of clips for the 8/81 known.
