Forearm screw for early model 8

Hi all, my Remington Autoloading Rifle, circa 1908, had the forearm screw stripped out long ago, a swivel was soldered on the barrel jacket, and a undersize replacement screw was epoxied in the forearm. When I bought it the seller broke the rifle down for transport, and learned the forearm screw was epoxied. He included it but it is undersize.
A friend is a hobby machinist and thinks a plug or bushing can be made and soldered in place, then tapped for the correct size of screw. My question is...what is the correct size screw? Can someone provide the dimensions or sell me a replacement screw?
Thanks,
Eterry

Well, the major diameter of the thread measures to be 0.158" and the pitch measures to be about 32 tpi. That's between an 8-32 and a 6-32. If you are going to make your own, I'd try an 8-32. There may be something a little closer in a metric thread, but I don't know. I'm not reading exactly what you want to do, but if you are going to make up both the barrel jacket boss to be silver-soldered to the jacket and the swivel screw, I'd go with an 8-32 for both. Putting a new boss on the jacket must be done with extreme precision in order to match the position of the hole in the forestock. Ask me how I know.

Thanks Dwalt; the threads on the boss are stripped, and rather than replace the whole boss I think I can fill the boss and re-tap it to correct size. If I cant get a correct size screw I may just get one that looks close and tap the boss for that.
Again, thanks,
Eterry

Try brass threaded inserts, it should hold & they come in 8/32 as well. Inexpensive, & can be replaced if needed.

You can make or find a screw that will work, but if you want a period correct, exact reproduction of the Model 8 forearm screw (which includes the loop) Bob with Circle B Ranch manufactures them. You won't be able to tell a difference between his reproductions and an original.

Ok, I ordered a replacement screw, finally got it in, but the threads in the boss wouldn't hold it...Sooooo...I took a 8-32 tap and die, used the tap on the boss and forearm escutcheon, then chased the threads on the screw to 8-32. The replacement screw head was too long, like .10" too long, so I attacked it with a file and remedied that also. Now the forearm is firmly attached and I'm ready for the range.

81police Do you know if Bob with Circle B Ranch makes a reproduction of the sling stud for the butt of the gun? mine has the hole and patina where one was but I'm not even sure if that was stock?
