The timing of this contest is being done so as to coincide with the fall hunting season. We know that many members use their old springpoles for hunting. So, while you are getting the beauty ready for the big hunt, do us a favor and take a picture of your stock and enter it in the contest.

The purpose of the contest is to show the variety of butt stocks that are on their Remington Model 8 & 81 rifles. We know that there are a variety of stocks on these rifles. A real close-up of the entire stock is what we would like to see.

The entries can and will include modified, aftermarket stocks; the wackier the better. Various styles, shapes modifications and NOT grades of wood are what we hope to see.

You do not have to worry about condition of the wood. Dents, scratches, cracks in the wood and marred finishes will be welcomed. We know these rifles were used for hunting and were subjected to use and abuse. This is not a beauty contest for wood but rather a style and shape contest.

I have twisted the arm of imfuncity and persuaded him to serve as contest moderator and commentator. Mitch has graciously agreed to post pictures, some with comment, for members who do not know how. You can contact Mitch through a PM for assistance. Members can post their own photographs and Mitch will greatly appreciate those who do.

The contest rules are very simple.

1. You must be a member of this forum to enter.
2. The stocks must be on a Remington model 8 or 81.
3. You may enter as many different stocks as you like.
4. Provide the year and caliber if possible.
5 Be sure to provide your member name.
6. Contest will run during October or until we have seen enough.

The entries will be examined by imfuncity, 81police and jack1653. The winner of the contest will be determined by a biased and subjective opinion of the examiners and will be subject to criticism of the membership that we will graciously accept and totally disregard. Mitch will announce the selected entry in November, if he can remember to. jack1653 has indicated that he may award a prize depending on his mood at that time and if his “jackitis” is in remission.

We are hoping for many different shapes and styles. We thank you in advance for your participation and hope that you will enjoy seeing the various entries.

Pistol grip .30 Rem Model 8. To me nothing defines a turn of the century classic rifle or shotgun quite like the pistol grip or "knob" stocks found on Remingtons, Brownings, and Winchesters.

My first Model 8, bought it at a gunshow in Abilene Texas about 1993, repaired by a Hutchins gun repair in Old Town, Maine shortly thereafter. The checkering is almost completely worn smooth.

My C Grade 8 in 32 Rem with fairly scarce butt and buttplate.

Here is one of my entries. This is a model 8 in 32 REM with steel shotgun but plate, round knob semi-pistol grip stock. Serial number 39072 making it a 1917 rifle. This stock and butt plate is much smaller than the "regular" M8 butt plate and stock. I call it my "petite" M8. See the pictures for comparison. The rifle does feel lighter and much more nimble. Even the screws for the butt plate are much smaller. This may have been a special order rifle. Remember people back then were much smaller. Turn of the century furniture was much smaller. I will send more pictures on the next post. The LOP is the standard 13.75".

Here is another entry. This is a standard grade M8 with special checkered butt stock and forearm in 30 REM. It is serial number 61600 making it a 1930 rifle. It has the flat semi-pistol grip stock and the fairly rare steel bottom tang butt plate with non-slip grooves. Please note the smooth silver inlay on the pistol grip cap. I found a business card of the previous owner rolled up in the stock. I had to flatten it out to take pictures. It has been put back where it belongs. He was a dental surgeon in NY, NY. If you have any tooth problems, give him a call. His telephone number is Chelsea 3-0615. Now where do you think a dental surgeon came up with enough silver for that cap? Maybe he was just practicing for a big cavity.

Hey Rob,

Thanks for sharing and the entries are great. I agree with your comments that there had to be some special orders for these rifles. There are many examples similar to what you have shared with us and this is why the contest was started. I like your description of the "petite" stock and when you see it next to a regular stock it is easy to see the difference.

The silver inlay is a tasteful touch of an alteration. Check the inventory and see if you have some more. Thanks again.

Here's the 1921 stock, s/n 45731, that came with the 1908 date code Model 8 (s/n 10221) I bought from Roger. I decided to add it to this thread, just for fun, since it is a non-matching piece of timber that I stripped and refinished. The picture is just when I was "sun-drying" the stock after stripping and cleaning off the varnish.
Nothing special here, the metal buttplate is off, and there are no "cheeks" present.



I enjoy various finishes on gun stocks, you folks sure do some amazing work out there on yours! Right now, I've done a dull, non-shiny finish on this stock. One of the "looks" that pleases me is that of a wartime milsurp darkened from preservation with linseed oil or any number of other combinations of oils and mineral spirits. The "Finn mix" with 1/3 Finnish pine tar, 1/3 beeswax, 1/3 natural turpentine is another nice one.

I'm using a beeswax, lemon oil mix, and turpentine blend on the 8 and the 520. No good pics to show yet of the "after" but I'll try. This is just for reference.

Great entries guys, especially ROBOPUMPS

Here's mine, a 1907 rifle that has exactly 50 notches in the metal...presumably for game taken. Anyways the stock is totally custom. Cool checkering pattern and a cheekpiece. The buttplate is an OLD piece of trimmed rubber, aftermarket of course. It's got a LONG custom forearm as well. If this gun could talk! Oh yeah, the receiver is hand stamped "O.A. RISTER 1907"

That's a neat stock, Cam. Reminds me of the flintlock Indian trade guns for some reason. I like the leather "flair"!

Love those round knobs. Oops, wrong "humpback". I still thought some of you would like this one. Pre model 11 with four digit serial number 9489. It has the original finish on the iron and the wood. Kiss my cheeks.

The month is about half gone and I was sure hoping that we would have had more stocks entering the contest. Surely some of you guys have some stocks that have had modifications. There are no bad stocks on these rifles, only some different ones. We will look at those outstanding beautiful wood on some of these guns also but they may not be judged.

Hey Guys,

The judges have rendered a decision about the most unusual variation of the stocks that have been seen on the model 8 and 81 rifles. We were challenged by each entry but finally came to a consensus. The entry was submitted by rem81auto and we refer the entry as the "appendage" gun. It is probably the strangest, and actually quite cool looking, stock job! a close runner up was the "dentist" rifle submitted by ROBOPUMP. Rob also had one of the nicer variations with his "petite" rifle.

The judges thank each and everyone who took the time to submit pictures for all of us to enjoy. I will be contacting rem81auto to get a mailing address to send him a small token of our appreciation.

Hey Rob,

That is a stock that has seen a lot of wear and tear, literally. I agree with you that the butt plate would be worth the price. There wasn't a good picture of the butt plate and if it is as rough as the stock, I don't know if I would take a chance.

You certainly do not see this style very often and they are on the rare side. Having said that, I picked up two in November, one straight stock and one of the old round knob pistol grip. They cleaned up very well and I guess I need to post some pictures.
