Hello Everybody,

Today I fired my Model 8 in .25 Rem for the first time in about 4 years. The old girl shot very well once I figured out where to hold on the bullseye target. So I guess I got inspired to join your fine forum after having been a lurker for several years. I know it is considered bad form to not post pics so will do that soon. It looks fairly original except for the buttplate. Someone force-fit a plastic Remington buttplate. It looks like it originally had a crescent plate but I will let the experts here judge that once the photos are up.

Next to it in the safe is another Model 8 in .32 Rem. It has the original crescent plate numbered to the gun and a tang sight. Stock looks to have been refinished but I don't think there are any extra holes. This one really is unpleasant to shoot with that dang crescent buttplate.

Welcome from N.Florida. Glad you have joined us and look forward to the 'Pichers'. An 8 in 25 still on my wish list. Can only imagine that it would be the most comfortable to shoot .I`ve gravitated toward the 30`s for that reason and tend to shoot the 35`s and the lone 81 in 300 Savage a bit less. I have one like yours in 32 with the steel crescent buttplate and it does let you know when the round goes off. I`m working on making up some slip on /tie on pads of latigo leather and a suitable amount of foam cushion for us sissies when I get the bench cleared of projects. When I have a few made up I`ll post some 'pichers'. Don`t worry Mitch I won`t start on em until the other projects are cleared .

Here are photos of the .25 Rem. Serial is 23XXX.
Target was fired yesterday at 100 yards offhand (standing), 20 shots. You can see the pasters from earlier misadventures as I was trying some mixed old factory (?) and someone else's reloads (always a little scary). It was hard to find zero. With the sight ladder at the lowest setting I still needed to put the top of the bead about 6" below the bottom of the black.
As stated in earlier post, the plastic buttplate must be a replacement. It does not fit right, as you can see. I don't think there are any extra holes in the metal but please confirm.
Is the swivel screw in the forend original?

Here are more pics

next to last set, mostly showing detail of replacement (?) buttplate. You can see where the buttplate is cracked crossways about 1 1/2" up from the bottom. It looks like it was forced to fit the curvature of the wood.

Last one. Serial is 23XXX, "F" code above, with K inside circle below.

You might try one of the aftermarket buttplates on Fleabay. Or you could try a steel original checkered one.
The crack in the forearm could respond well to some clear or brown epoxy, of course you'd have to make a form for cauls to keep things straight and not close up the barrel sleeve groove too much.
A Very pretty Lady, and a self-loading Rifle as well....

Thank you for sharing your photos with us. Your rifle looks all original to me, except for (and you already pointed it out!) the plastic buttplate.

Oh also, the little swivel looking loop for the forearm screw is not to be used as a sling swivel. Remington shaped it that way to no tools were required afield to take it down. Looks like you're having plenty of fun with that ole springpole!

According to the serial number and production year info on this site, it was made in 1911. It is fun to take it out once in awhile and give it an airing. I invested in reloading dies sometime back. The target was fired with my own reloads- Hornady 117 gr RN and a very moderate amount of IMR 4895. Over the years, I've accumulated enough brass to keep it going.
