With the collection of emails in my box this link appeared today. I immediately thought of Adam and others here that enjoy the genius of John Browning`s designs and are not afraid to tackle a new project. Looks like it could be fun and has some good information on the working innards to add to our appreciation of these classic A5 shotguns and our own Model 8/81`s.

Re: I wonder if John Browning would Approve ?
blasphemy! No in all seriousness the only thing I'm not fond of is the mixture of an original (and beautiful btw) blued steel and that parkerized looking magazine extension. They kinda clash.
BUT!...
It looks like the owner addressed that. It looks kinda wicked here!

Hey fellas,
Being a Browning Auto 5 collector for the last 35 + yrs. ,I'm a stickler for original only A-5s. But on the cool factor scale this is high up the scale. It also makes the A-5 more effective for modern day house protection.
And by the way Sarge, I'm wondering if you have any of those 30 remington brass left for sale? I'm definitely interested in buying some if you have any left. Let me know.
Thanks for your time,
Roger

Sarge756,
I know I'm pretty new here, but if you do have some .30 Remington brass I could use some too.
Thanks,
Jerry

Re: I wonder if John Browning would Approve ?
Joe, thanks for linking us to that website - that was a fun shotgun project to read about. Although I am not so much interested in the 3-gun shooting sports, what did get my attention was the notion of swapping out my shell lifter in my 720 Savage for a Browning speed-feed 2-piece lifter.Sarge756 wrote:With the collection of emails in my box this link appeared today. That would be cool - but I'd like to check for fitment before I'd buy one.
Also, FWIW any old Remington 870 aftermarket mag tube extension will work on these A5/Model 11/Savage 720 shotguns. Least they do on my Savage! Way back in my project 720 thread I had a couple pics of the shotgun with a 7-shot extension tube, but minus a barrel - was still searching for a donor short barrel at the time.
That metal refinish does look nice, but I'm sort of happy with an old blue finish on these shotguns. I had thought about a more WW2 grey/green parkerizing finish on a "builder" Browning (or Remington or Savage) for a vintage look - but that's a future project!
BTW I do really like the way my 720 runs - have managed to get out and blast away some, no burps or hiccups - it just goes "bang" fast as you can squeeze the trigger! Thank you, John Browning!

Re: I wonder if John Browning would Approve ?
Hey Adam, I have done a speed-load conversion on a standard 16 Auto-5 browning. I made it(late 40s x-series pre-war type safety) into my deer hunting shotgun. I swapped the trigger plate for a sweet sixteen post -war rear safety version at the same time. I tapped the back of the receiver to accept one of the Redding peep sights designed for the rem.m-8/81. I just happened to have a spare one back then. There were some hickups along the way but I did it without any instructions at all. I just took apart one of my late 50s sweet sixteens to find out what parts were different. I made up a list, and ordered the new parts from browning that were available still. The others were sourced from a Quad cities gunparts dealer who I'm acquainted with. One of the issues involved the shell stop which was a new browning sweet sixteen part. After having problems with it I contacted Midwest Gunworks( former Browning factory mechanics). They sent me 2 different mag-12 shell stops and one was the correct fit, which has worked OK ever since. They had no explanation for it nor do I. But never argue with success. I don't know if yo'll have trouble with a 12 guage conversion, but they're the guys to call if you have any questions.
Good luck,
Roger

Re: I wonder if John Browning would Approve ?
Thanks Cam, for part 2 . I like that finish too. I have a couple Model 11`s that would be good candidates for this transformation when I get caught up with all the other projects.
Pm`s to Roger and to new member`s Jerry_H and H_Charlie in Kalifornia re the 30 Rem brass.

OMGosh! This is soooo cool! I have a 1940's A5 I bought years ago but hate that 2-handed loading proceedure. Now I can do away with that and it's not a permanent thing.
Definitely doing some squirrel hunting with the A5 next fall.
