I recently picked up a pair of 8s. The top is a 1924, the bottom a 1928.

The top has the single screw peep. It's marked 8-A. Pistol grip. It also has a second set of date letters, maybe factory repaired?
The bottom just says Model 8. No peep. Straight grip.

What can anyone tell me about the differences between these two.

Can you tell us the extra dates codes and if they have any numbers beside them?

The recoil pad is mostly likely an aftermarket addition.

Good looking Model 8's you got there!

RC3 - Rifle returned to factory for repair - November, 1934
ET3 - Rifle returned to factory for repair - October, 1926
DS - Rifle manufactured - September, 1925

The REP is a general proof mark. I'm not sure what the G3 marking signifies.
