Have y'all ever seen one of these? Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety) Model 81's. They're briefly mentioned in John Henwood's book. Here's a photo of their markings on the bottom of the pistol grip. I've only ever seen 2 before.

Cam, That very one is mine and it is also the one pictured in John's book. I have the bill of sale listing when it was sold by the DPS. Without digging it out of my files, I believe there were six sold along with about 800 to 850 Marlin and Winchester 30/30's . Mine came out of the Ed Furler collection sold thru Collectors Firearms in Houston a number of years ago. All my best ,Joe.

Hey Joe! Yes, I do remember that being your rifle, and a very neat piece of history it is.
I remember when Collectors was selling parts of Ed Furler Jr.'s collection, dad ended up with an 8 and 81 that were from the Henwood book as well...but nothing really nice like your DPS rifle!
The other one I've seen had a nickel plated metal job, resides in a museum, and was around serial number 6165 or something like that.

Hey Joe,
Any chance that you might want to part withe the DPS. I have another case of "jackitis" and this might help give me some relief.

Jack, not at this time ,but I will keep you in mind if something changes. We still need to get together at one of the upcoming central Il gunshows. Until that time, all my very best, Joe.
