I came across one recently that has no markings on it's left side. Is that normal?

Also, the serial is in the 18,000 range. About what year would that be? Caliber was .25 Remington. I thought .25 caliber was discontinued very early, does all this add up?

18k serial number range would be within 1910 mfg. Rifles made before, during, and several years after did not have any left side receiver markings.

The 25Rem was produced, in small numbers, throughout Model 8 production
