Date code / Repair Code Question???

For those of you guys who collect other Remingtons, have y'all ever encountered a Remington code followed by an "8"?
This Model 8, by serial number, was made in 1911 which of course pre-dates the Remington date code system altogether. Repair codes were stamped "3" so this one has me stumped. I know there are several other numbers that represent other things, but never seen or heard of an "8". Perhaps it's a repair code "3" applied incorrectly or stamped twice?
